Medical researchers continue trying to make quitting smoking easier than ever. The latest is an injection, kind of like an anti-smoking vaccine, being tested by a New Orleans company.
How does a vaccine work against smoking? Dr. Robert Jeanfreau says it's a serum of antibodies that bind to nicotine, making it impossible for the brain to absorb. But like any stop smoking program, the subject needs a little willpower.
“It's not going to take somebody that doesn't want to quit and make them quit,” said Dr. Jeanfreau. “You still have to have a highly motivated person.”
Dr. Jeanfreau’s company, Benchmark Research of New Orleans, is now seeking volunteers to test the vaccine.
“We want smokers who essentially have stable health, no recent hospitalizations, no recent heart surgeries,” he said. The age range is 18-65.
