For a second weekend in a row, Mother Nature has wrought havoc with plans to re-plant thousands of Jefferson Parish Christmas trees in the marshes of coastal Louisiana.
The coastal restoration project relies upon a flotilla of volunteers, and their boats, to "plant" the trees into "cages" set up along the coast.
Coordinator Jason Smith says although thousands of trees have been collected, they are at the mercy of the weather in getting the used Christmas Trees to their final destination.
Organizers had planned four consecutive weekends to place the trees out in Louisiana wetlands, but the weather has hampered those efforts.
Listen to Jason Smith talk about the Christmas tree recycling project:
Officials will still try to get the trees out into the marshes over the next two weekends, and are still seeking the public's help.
"We still have volunteer events scheduled for January 23rd, and January 30th," Smith said.
Anyone wishing more information on volunteering their time and/or boats for the Jefferson tree recycling program can call the Department of Environmental Affairs at 504-731-4612.
