Additional rain could worsen Northshore river flooding

Many rivers and streams north of the lake are at or near flood stage, due to days of heavy rainfall.

Forecasters say that as more rain is forecast for today, anything more than about one inch of rainfall could spell trouble.

"If we get a little heavier amounts than that, then we could potentially see additional rises and new flood crests on some of the rivers," said National Weather Service meteorologist Tim Destri.

Destri says one of the main areas of concern is the West Pearl River area, along with other streams such as the Tchefunte, Abita, and Bouge Chitto.

Listen to Destri talk about the potential for flooding from Northshore rivers over the next few days:

The Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for all of Southeast Louisiana starting Thursday afternoon, and Destri says that's when the bulk of potentially heavy rainfall could impact Northshore rivers.

"That's going to be particularly critical for areas around the town of Pearl River, down to Slidell, for some of those subdivisions...that are prone to flooding when the river gets that high," he said.
