Tyler Cain ran for two touchdowns and West Monroe's defense produced the first shutout in the Class 5A state championship as the Rebels defeated Rummel 30-0 in the Superdome Saturday night.
The second-seeded Rebels (15-0), champions of District 1, won their seventh state title since 1993.
The top-seeded Raiders (14-1), champions of District 10, fell short in the first title-game appearance in the program's 47-year history.
West Monroe took a 6-0 lead when Cain ran one yard for a touchdown with 4:45 left in the second quarter. The Rebels extended the lead to 9-0 when Cody Hollis kicked a 25-yard field goal with one second left in the second quarter.
West Monroe defensive end Jordan Allen intercepted a pass from Damian Williams and returned the ball 4 yards to the Rummel 21-yard line. Four plays later, Cain ran 8 yards for a touchdown that gave the Rebels a 16-0 lead with 1:40 left in the third quarter.
West Monroe completed the scoring when quarterback Paul Turner ran 86 yards for a touchdown with 11:22 left in the game, and backup quarterback Connor Osborne threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ivan Manning with 1:59 left.
Turner finished with 18 carries for 154 yards and a touchdown, and he completed 8 of 12 passes for 63 yards.
The fewest points scored in a title game since Class 5A was formed in 1991 had been the three points scored by West Monroe in losing to Destrehan in last year's final.
The last time a shutout occurred in the highest-classification title game was in 1982, when Ruston defeated Neville in the Class 4A final, 8-0.
In the Class 4A state championship game, Taylor Burch passed for 309 yards and three touchdowns as second-seeded Neville defeated top-seeded Franklinton 31-15.
The Tigers, champions of District 3, finished 13-1 as they won their fourth state title and first since 1984. The Demons, champions of District 9, finished 14-1 and failed to win their first state title in their second trip to the final, the other coming in 1981.
Burch completed 17-of-25 passes and threw scoring passes of 58 and 95 yards to John Diarse and a 4-yard pass to Eniandrarius Levine. He also rushed for 92 yards on eight carries.
The Demons trailed 21-0 at halftime but got back in the game in the third quarter. Devonte Flowers recovered a fumble on a punt return, giving Franklinton the ball at the Neville 21. On the next play, Vincent Wilson caught a touchdown pass from Terrance Magee to make the score 21-7 with 5:58 left in the third quarter.
Wilson later scored on a 41-yard touchdown run and Reggie Wilson followed with a run for a two-point conversion, getting the Demons within 21-15 with 1:05 left in the third quarter.
But Neville extended its lead to 24-15 when Matthew Squyres made a 32-yard field goal with 11:09 remaining in the game. Burch's 4-yard touchdown pass to Levine made it 31-15 with 6:20 remaining.
The Tigers failed to take advantage of two early scoring opportunities, as Squyres was wide left on a 46-yard field-goal attempt and wide right on a 30-yard attempt.
Neville took a 7-0 lead when Cedrico Pollard scored a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:30 left in the first quarter.
The Tigers increased their lead to 14-0 when Diarse caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from Burch with 11:48 remaining in the second quarter. Those two later teamed on a 95-yard touchdown pass that gave the Tigers a 21-0 lead with 9:36 left in the second quarter.
Haynesville stopped a late-game push by South Plaquemines, with a Kamarcea West interception during the final seconds sealing a 19-12 win and making the Golden Tornado Class 1A state football champions Saturday.
Two-time defending champion South Plaquemines took a 6-0 lead on a Seth Ancar fumble recovery and 51-yard touchdown run. Eric Ragas' two-point conversion pass failed.
Haynesville tied the score before halftime, on a 22-yard touchdown run by Demarcus Jackson and a failed extra-point attempt by Kirk Allen.
In the third, South Plaquemines again scored first on a 53-yard pass from Ragas to Manuel Black. But the Hurricanes again failed in a conversion attempt.
On the team's next possession, Ragas was intercepted by Kelandree Hamilton, a pick paving the way for a four-yard D.J. Lewis touchdown run. Just under four minutes later, Haynesville increased its lead,19-12, with a B'Air McGee touchdown run and a blocked extra point.
South Plaquemines drove to Haynesville 10 in the last minute but was denied by the West interception.
