Louisiana's politicians are pushing the Food and Drug Administration to do an about-face on its plan to ban raw oysters from the Gulf Coast during the warm months.
On Tuesday, members of Louisiana's congressional delegation spoke out against the proposed ban. They held a news conference in Washington urging the FDA to scrap its plan.
Gov. Bobby Jindal has sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg to take a hard look at the economic impact the plan would have on Gulf states.
Last month, the FDA said it wanted to ban the sale of raw oysters during the warm months when oysters can carry deadly bacteria. About 15 people die each year in the United States from
raw oysters infected with Vibrio vulnificus.
