Coastal communities get ready for Ida

Plaquemines Parish, particularly that stretch of communities lining the Mississippi River as it descends to the Gulf, is one of the regions most at risk from Hurricane Ida. A voluntary evacuation began Monday morning for the southern portion of the parish.

"Everyone south of Conoco on the Westbank and on the Eastbank from White Ditch, south" is in the evacuation zone, said Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

Nungesser said there is no coastal levee in White Ditch, which means rising water and wind out of the east from Ida will push Breton Sound over the main road. He has similar concerns about LA 23 on the Westbank.

"We have 30,000 sand bags ready and if it looks like we can save the highway and keep it dry, we will flood fight," said Nungesser. "As it turns and puts more pressure on the Eastbank of Plaquemines Parish, we're prepared to flood fight there if we have to, as well."

Schools in Plaquemines Parish are closed today, and the Belle Chasse auditorium will offer shelter to those who need it.
