Ida continues to drift northward

Tropical Depression Ida is reemerging over the Caribbean sea after drenching Nicaragua and Honduras.

Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center say Ida is expected to restrengthen over the next couple of days, especially if the system avoids the Yucatan Peninsula on a likely track into the southern Gulf of Mexico.

As of Friday afternoon, Ida had sustained winds of 35 miles per hour, with gusts up to 45 miles per hour.

Ida's eventual track is uncertain; a cold front due to arrive along the northern Gulf coast on Monday may impact Ida's direction, or perhaps even cause the storm to stall in the Gulf.
