Former N.O. tech chief and wife, vendor indicted

A federal grand jury today indicted the city's former technology director, his wife and a one-time city vendor on fraud and bribery conspiracy charges.

U.S. Attorney Jim Letten says the three conspired together to steal and launder money, lie to the FBI, file false income tax returns and commit bribery.

"A federal grand jury returned an indictment against Greg Meffert, the former chief technology officer, Linda Meffert, his wife, and New Orleans..charging them with a 63-count indictment," Letten said.

Meffert was the City of New Orleans' technology director from 2002 to 2006.

According to Letten, the three used Meffert's position with the city to funnel millions of dollars to St. Pierre, who allegedly kicked money back to Meffert and his wife.

The criminal indictments come just days after a civil jury found Meffert and companies owned by St. Pierre conspired with Dell Inc. to steal technology from other companies that worked on the New Orleans crime camera program.

Federal authorities in June confirmed a criminal investigation into the city's technology office and contracts for a surveillance program that employed cameras in high-crime areas.

Today's criminal indictments came days after a civil jury found Meffert and companies owned by St. Pierre conspired with Dell Inc.to unfairly compete with two other companies that worked on the camera program.
