The quickest of all seasons ends this weekend as week #10 of the high school football regular season is already upon us. For the schools that don't make the playoffs it will be the last time that the vast majority of the seniors will suit up for the gridiron. For some squads post season births will be lost and earned on this first Friday of November.
Among the contests to take note of as we break them down with the unofficial power ratings are:
Brother Martin vs. Jesuit
This battle between 2 Catholic League teams features a 5-3 Crusader squad that is #22 in the power ratings and a 5-4 Blue Jay club that sits at #18 in the power ratings. A Jesuit win could give the Blue Jays a home game in the first round of the 5A playoffs.
Covington at Mandeville
The Lions of Covington head into play at 4-5 and ranked #34 in the power ratings. The Skippers of Mandeville are 6-3 and hold the #14 position in the power ratings. A Covington win quite likely puts the Lions in the 5A playoffs. A Skippers' victory keeps them at home for the first round of the 5A playoffs.
East St. John at Hahnville
The visiting Wildcats head into week 10 at #11 in the power ratings with a 7-2 mark. The home standing Tigers have a record of 8-1 and are #7 in the power ratings. No matter the outcome both schools seem destined to host round 1 games in the playoffs.
St. Paul's at Fontainebleau
The visiting Wolves (8-1 / #5 in the power ratings) will be at Hunter Stadium for week #1 of the post season. Fontainebleau (1-8 and on a 8 game losing streak) is hoping to close out the 2009 season with an upset win.
Salmen at Pearl River
The Spartans who are 6-2 with a #5 ranking in the power points are one of the top teams in 4A football. The Rebels of Pearl River who enter kick-off at 5-4 and #27 in the power ratings seem a solid pick win or lose to be in the 4A tournament.
Destrehan at St. Amant
Destrehan is #31 in the 5A power rankings with a 4-5 record. St. Amant is #33 in the 5A power rankings at 5-4. Seems simple, the winner goes to the playoffs, the loser stays home.
Walker at Franklinton
Walker who is 3-6 with #53 ranking in the 5A power ratings is hoping for something good to happen on the last Friday of the season. Franklinton (9-0 / #2 in the 4A power ratings) is among the best teams in the state.
Riverdale at East Jefferson
The Rebels of Riverdale (6-3 / #28 in the 4A power ratings) probably need a win to make the playoffs. The Warriors of East Jefferson (#15 in the 4A power ratings with a 6-3 record) probably need a victory to secure home field in the first round of the playoffs.
Riverside Academy at Newman
Both Riverside (6-3 / #23 in the 2A power ratings) and Newman (7-2 / #16 in the 2A power ratings) will be in the playoffs. But a Newman win secures a first round home play-off game for the Greenies.
De La Salle vs. Holy Cross
With a 1-8 record De La Salle is hoping to finish 09 on a positive note. Holy Cross (7-2 / #8 in the 3A power ratings) will be moving on to the playoffs after tonight.
