Georges makes mayoral bid official

Wealthy businessman John Georges is entering the race for New Orleans' mayor.

Georges' announcement Wednesday wasn't unexpected: He held a downtown fundraiser last month and, for months, has been spotted at events around the city.

The race to succeed Mayor Ray Nagin has become known more for who isn't running than who is. While qualifying is still a month away, with elections in early 2010, only a handful of prospective candidates have announced plans to run, including a state lawmaker, housing activist and planning consultant.

Term limits prevent Nagin from running again.

Georges ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2007.
