Late-season tropical storm forms in Caribbean

Tropical storm Ida has formed in the southwest Caribbean, quickly adding muscle and prompting storm warnings for the coast of Nicaragua and two Colombian islands.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the ninth tropical storm of the season took shape this afternoon.

Channel 4 Chief Meteorologist Carl Arredando says it will be a "wait and see" situation to see if Ida will make it into the Gulf of Mexico.

"The official forecast track from the National Hurricane Center has it moving inland and moving over land, before reemerging over the Caribbean north of Honduras," according to Carl.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 60 mph.

The storm's center is about 75 miles east of Bluefields, Nicaragua. It is moving toward the northwest near 6 mph.

Storm warnings were in effect for the eastern coast of Nicaragua and the Colombian islands of San Andres and Providencia.
