Jefferson Parish approves new budget with water rate increase

Jefferson Parish has approved its budget for the next fiscal year. It includes an increase in fees for sewerage and water service.

Households that use more than 8,000 gallons of water a month will see their bills go up an average of $2.27 per month for the next few years. Even with the increase, Parish President Aaron Broussard says Jefferson will have some of the lowest rates in the region.

"There haven't been increases in water and sewerage rates for many many years, and we are still going to have the lowest water rates in the state of Louisiana and we're still going to have the lowest sewerage rates in Louisiana for parishes of comparable size," Broussard said.

"We have to start addressing some of this crumbling infrastructure of these lines, water lines and sewage lines beneath the ground," Broussard continued. "It's a process that does have to be maintained or you're going to have big problems."
