Touro encourages teens to play doctor

Choosing the right career field is more important now than ever. And, what better way to see if a career is right for you than by 'just doing it'?

Students from 16 area high schools will get some hands-on experience in the medical field this week.

Touro Infirmary is conducting its 2nd Annual Health Career Camp. It's a five-day program that Touro hopes will encourage students to actively consider a career in medicine in New Orleans.

You might say Touro is encouraging kids to play doctor. "But more to play nurse and allied health, where there are severe shortages," says Denise Chetta, Director of Volunteer Services at Touro.

Listen to Don Ames' conversation with Chetta:

Chetta says the kids will get a taste of just about every job in the hospital...from nursing and rehabilitation, to respiratory therapy and pharmacy practice...to see if they might be interested in a job in nursing and allied health services.

The students will receive CPR training and view real tests used in cardiac care. They'll even perform in the operating room.

"They'll scrub and suit up for surgery. And then, a chicken breast is going to be draped as if it were real tissue," says Chetta.

"They'll cut into it using the instruments and learn how to stitch and suture," she says.

This year's Career Camp will also give students the opportunity to meet one-on-one with college recruiters and explore their options for a career in medicine in New Orleans.

Th Camp has seen a 66% increase in enrollment and three times the funding since the first year.

Sponsors include: The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, The Keller Family Foundation, and The Wal-Mart Foundation.
