Melancon raised the most money among LA congressmen in 2nd quarter

New campaign finance reports show DemocraticCongressman Charlie Melancon, a possible candidate for U.S. Senate next year, led Louisiana congressional delegates in fundraising for the second quarter of this year. Melancon took in just under $400,000, bringing his total campaign warchest to about $1.2 million.

Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat of Southern Opinion Media and Research says challenging the incumbent David Vitter for Senate will take about $5 million.

"If he decides to run against Vitter, then you'll see him step up his efforts to raise money," Pinsonat said.

Vitter raised about $1.2 million between April 1 and June 30. Vitter reports about $3.2 million total in his warchest.
