Jobs for veterans on the fast track

The RecruitMilitary Career Fair takes place in New Orleans today at the Fair Grounds Race Course.

The free hiring event is intended to help recently returning troops and other veterans and service members, as well as their spouses find jobs.

Low-end, entry-level positions up to senior mid-level positions are available.

"It's for veterans that are just transitioning out of the service or veterans that have been out for a while just looking for a new opportunity," says Robert Walker, Director of Career Fairs for RecruitMilitary.

Listen to Don Ames interview with Walker:

Vets will be able to interview with an all-star team of veteran-friendly national, regional, and local employers. "We have a lot of great
companies that are attending, from defense contractors, local companies, retail and everything else in between," says Walker.

Those companies include Acadiana Sheetmetal Inc., Atlantic Marine Alabama, LLC, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, DeVry University, Herzing University--New Orleans, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Louisiana Air National Guard, Louisiana Army National Guard, Military Sealift Command, New Orleans Private Patrol Service, Inc., Nicholls State University, Northrop Grumman, Orion South Inc., Raytheon, Spring Hill College, Strategic Restaurants, T-Mobile, The Dwyer Group, University of New Orleans, and Walgreens.

Some thirty companies in all will be at the event, looking to hire veterans who already have civilian work experience, men and women who are transitioning from active duty to civilian life, members of the National Guard and reserves, and military spouses.

"We have a lot of great companies that have attended our events for years now and have had a lot of success in hiring veterans," says Walker.

He says those companies want to make a difference for those who are serving and have served our country.

The RecruitMilitary Career Fair takes place on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at The Fair Grounds Race Course, 1751 Gentilly Boulevard, from 11am-3pm. Job applicants can begin to show up at 10:30am.

The event is produced in cooperation with the President's National Hire Veterans Committee, The American Legion, and the Military Spouse Corporate Career Network.
