Metairie Bank official pleads guilty to theft

A former Louisiana bank official has pleaded guilty to embezzling about $395,000 from a suburban New Orleans bank over the course of nearly 15 years.

Sixty-three-year-old Maria May, of Garyville, faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine following her guilty plea Wednesday to one count of bank theft.

Federal prosecutors say Metairie Bank and Trust officials reported the theft to the FBI after it was uncovered by a bank audit.

May was the Metairie bank's vice president and branch administrator from 1993 until June 2008. Her sentencing is set for Oct. 21.
