St. Charles Parish authorities say the foul odor coming from Dow Chemical in Hahnville could be around awhile.
"We don't want to make any predictions about when this could dissipate, so we are just leaving it at that," Public Information Officer Renee Allemand Simpson told WWL First News. "Dow St. Charles Operations has advised this event could continue for an extended period of time."
She insists the air is safe to breath. "We're still dealing with this residual odor, but we know from testing from the EPA and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality that, as of this morning, the levels are below that which would pose a health risk to the public."
That having been said, Simpson acknowledges that some people could suffer from irritated eyes, nose and throat, headaches or nausea as a result of the stinky fumes from Ethyl Acrylate. Officials advise that if you experience any of these symptoms, you are advised to move away from the odor or seek medical attention.
Listen to Simpson:
"The actual operation to get rid of the chemical is still ongoing, so that is where we are getting this," she said.
