Curtain coming down on local video stores?

At the end of July, Blockbuster will close locations in the Riverside Market on Tchoupitoulas Street and across from the Esplanade Mall at the Pavilion in Kenner.

It may be a sign that video stores will soon say 'It's a wrap.'

Newer online video services like Blockbuster.com and Netflix are finding more favor with folks who don't want to venture out of the house.

"It gives you the option of receiving discs in the mail, so you don't have to go out in the weather," says WYES Film Critic Rick Barton. Use of broadcast video-on-demand is also gaining popularity.

Streaming options allow you to get movies on your computer, which you can hook up to your big screen TV, and watch at the click of a button.

"So it just seems to me that the convenience and options have got to be hurting the major video chains around the country," says Barton.

Barton says you can also choose the exact titles you want online, and not have to rely on getting to the store when that title might be on the shelf.
