Nasty smell covers area




A foul smell has descended on much of the New Orleans region this morning.  Officials say it isn't dangerous, but people report getting light headed and nauseated.

A worker at the St. Charles Parish Emergency Operations Center told WWL First News, "Dow had a unit get upset.  It released a bad odor.  It is non-toxic.  It's non-hazardous.  It's not dangerous as far as we know right now."

The St. Charles EOC identifies the source of the odor as Ethyl Acrylate.

Officials say the weather is also playing a role in the stinky conditions.  "The rain is just basically keeping the odor around."

They have not issued any evacuations or health advisories.

A statement on the St. Parish Website says:

ODOR COMING FROM DOW HAHNVILLE SITE

Dow officials are working with the St. Charles Parish EOC to provide any protective measures to the community.

Dow is aware of an odor coming from its site in Hahnville. Personnel on the scene have identified the odor and are currently working to reduce and eliminate it. Company officials are working with the St. Charles Parish Dept. of Emergency Preparedness to provide any protective measures to the community.
