NOFD battles 5-alarm Algiers blaze

A spokesman for the New Orleans Fire Department says that 70 firefighters fought a massive blaze Saturday night in Algiers.

Firefighter Michael Willaims says the crews responded to a fire that spread to four homes near the intersection of Slidell and Freret streets on the Westbank.

According to Williams, three of the homes were unoccupied, but a fourth had five people residing there.

Williams said that all the occupants made it out safely, but that four firefighters suffered injuries and were treated at the scent.

He said that two were treated with I.V.'s after battling the blaze in extremely high humidity.

Another was treated with oxygen for smoke inhalation, and another treated for a 2nd-degree burn on his neck.

Investigators have not yet determined a cause for the 5-alarm fire.
