Former Tennessee Titans and Houston Oilers quarterback Steve McNair is dead, according to a spokesman for the Nashville Police Department.
The spokesman said that McNair suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head in downtown Nashville.
Nashville police spokesperson Don Aaron said that a female victim was also found dead.
McNair was a standout athlete at Mt. Olive High School in Mississippi, where he played football, basketball, baseball, and was a member of the track team.
WWL's Deke Belavia said that McNair's years at Division I-AA Alcorn State showed McNair's potential.
"I'll never forget him.. Southern had great teams at that time, but I don't think Southern ever beat him at that level," Deke said.
Bellavia described McNair as "the greatest quarterback to never win a Superbowl."
After McNair's senior season at Alcorn, where he finished 3rd in the Heisman race, he was drafted by the Houston Oilers.
McNair made the move to the Titans when the franchise moved to Nashville.
He also played late in his career for the Baltimore Ravens before retiring from the NFL in 2008.
