Police arrest hotel resident in Canal St. Hotel killing

New Orleans Police say a 21-year-old man living at the now-closed Canal St. Hotel is the one who murdered a New Orleans woman there earlier this week.

Deputy chief Marlon Defillo says Troy Gloston-Phelps got into an argument with the victim shortly after she arrived in his hotel room.

"Mr. Gloston-Phelps apparently began questioning the victim about 'where are the other girls? The other girls?' Now, what that meant, that's yet to be determined," said Defillo.

During the murder investigation, Defillo says they found a lot of stolen goods in the suspect's hotel room.

"Vehicle tires to rims to electronics to jewelry, watches, you name it," Defillo said. He say they believe it was stolen from Jefferson parish.

The killing was the latest in a string of incidents that prompted the city to label the hotel a public nuisance and shut it down.

"We're talking about prostitution, we're talking about gun violations, armed robbery," said Defillo.

Police have been going through the hotel since the city shut it down Thursday. They report finding several guns, including an AK-47 rifle.
