Experts: removal of Nagin's email appears deliberate

Computer forensics experts hired by the city of New Orleans say they have recovered Mayor Ray Nagin's full 2008 calendar from the city's computer servers.

However, the Louisiana Technology Council said today that they have so far been unable to recover any of the mayor's emails, which were apparently intentionally deleted from the city's storage system sometime in the last year.

Chris Reade is one of the local IT professionals involved in the search.

"Last June, the Mayor's mailbox, along with all of his staff, were on the original server," Reade said. "When we got to that original server, all of those mailboxes were still there, with the exception of one mailbox, namely, the mayor's."

According to Reade, it appears clear to the IT investigators that the deletion of the mayor's emails were not accidental.

"It took a technically competent human action," Reade said. "You can't just, you know, hit 'delete' on your computer and it goes away...it requires you to run some programs against these databases to remove it...that's why I say it is not an action that would be taken by accident."

Reade said that the Louisiana Technology Council will continue to search the drives for the mayor's emails.
