The 2009 Lacombe Crab Fest takes place Saturday and Sunday at John Davis Park on 12th Street.
Thousands of seafood fans are expected to claw their way to the celebration of the shellfish. "Actually, I think the soft shell crab kind of came to life here in Lacombe," says Debbi Smith with the Tammany Trace Foundation.
The festival promises two days of great family fun, entertainment and carnival rides. And, of course, all kinds of crabs. "We'll have boiled crabs, fried soft shell crab po-boys, fried crab claws, sauteed crab claws, crab cakes and more," says Smith.
There'll be plenty of non-shellfish treats as well. Friends of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services will also serve up Louisiana Creole favorites such as jambalaya and alligator on a stick.
Listen to Don Ames' conversation with Debbi Smith:
For some down south cooking, try Bradley Ducre's fried green tomatoes, chicken and sausage gumbo, hot sausage po-boys and red beans and rice with smoked sausage. The Lutheran Village Church will serve up fried shrimp and fried catfish po-boys while the Spice Doctors will serve Shrimp Creole.
If you're look for something eclectic, try Vidalia Grill's grilled shrimp and corn combo or Stanley's Fine Foods shrimp wraps, chicken wraps, fajitas chicken and shrimp salad, tacos, beef and lamb gyros. Bil Wil and the Warden's will serve a variety of items including fried onion petals, chicken on a stick, rib-eye steak or sausage on a bun, seafood and spinach volcano, and crawfish pasta.
There will be plenty of beverages -- beer, fruit smoothies, teas, virgin daiquiris, snowballs, hot, cold and frozen coffees and lemonade -- and desserts.
The live daylong music will range from gospel to rock, country to jazz, and zydeco to the blues.
The 2009 Lacombe Crab Fest will be held from 11 AM to 11 PM on Saturday, June 27, and 12 PM to 9 PM on Sunday, June 28. Admission is $3 before 5 PM, $5 after 5 PM, and free to all under the age of ten.
