Morning murder leaves judge's 50-year-old brother dead

Shots rang out early this morning in River Ridge. When cops got there they found a 50-year-old man dead in the street not far from Jeff Highway and Williams Blvd.

"Shortly after 5:00 AM, our 911 center received a call of gun shots in the 400 block of Providence Lane in River Ridge," Sergeant Larry Dyess said in a news release. "Responding officers located the body of a B/M lying in the street in front of 339 Providence Lane suffering from gun shot wounds."

He was pronounced dead on the scene. The man was identified as Wendell Berry, of 339 Providence Lane.

He is reportedly Jefferson Parish Judge June Darensburg's brother.

"Berry has an extensive criminal history consisting of possession of crack cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, parole violations, possession of a firearm with a controlled dangerous substance, simple battery and attachment arrests," Dyess said.
