Massive manhunt on the Northshore

Four inmates escaped from a St. Tammany Parish jail overnight. Hundreds of officers saturated the area looking for the escapees.

"One of the most massive and intensive manhunts probably in St. Tammany's history has ensued," Sheriff Jack Strain told WWL First News. "We have no less than 200 to 250 sheriffs deputies, Covington police department, Louisiana State Police and state officials from the Washington Parish Corrections Center - State Corrections."

Strain says their first clue was a call from a Covington resident who saw a man in a parish jail uniform running across the street. They did a head count and found four men missing.

"Four inmates were able to defeat the actual structure in the jail and escape," he said.

Listen to the Sheriff:

All of the escapees were in for murder or attempted murder.

They caught three of them in relatively short order and as of 5:00am were hopeful of finding the 4th, who Strain says is likely bleeding badly from the razor wire.

Deputies identified the three captured inmates as Eric Buras (left), Jason Gainey (middle), and Gary Slaydon (right.)

Police dogs and two helicopter are still searching for the fourth man, Timothy Murray (pictured at top) who was in for murder.
