It looks like things are finally starting to pick up for the Six Flags theme park in New Orleans East that's been shuttered since Katrina.
Despite some ongoing legal battles with the Six Flags corporation, there are several potential projects in the works that could transform the property.
One such possibility is a combination water park and youth sports complex.
New Orleans Councilman-at-Large Arnie Fielkow is flying to Texas on Friday to check out the company called "Big League Dreams."
Fielkow says the Texas developer has an interesting approach to developing such sites.
''What intrigues me about the Dallas site, it is the only site that they have that combines water park and youth sports which I think is a very attractive combination,'' Fielkow told WWL First News.
Listen to WWL's David Blake's interview with Councilman Arnie Fielkow:
In the coming days and weeks, public meetings will continue in New Orleans East as residents and community leaders search for the best way to develop the shuttered theme park.
"This isn't about what the council would like, this is about what the neighborhoods and the community would like," Fielkow said.
Fielkow says another firm, Southern Star Amusement, continues to talk about buying the property with a plan to double the number of rides, as well as adding a water park.
Representatives for Southern Star, a startup company based in Baton Rouge, are still in active in talks with New Orleans city leaders about developing the eastern New Orleans amusement park which has been closed since Katrina.
