Deke: Saints sign a new defensive end with a troubled past

With the uncertain status of defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant to start the 2009 season, the New Orleans Saints added some insurance to the position. The Saints Signed defensive end Anthony Hargrove.

The St. Louis Rams drafted Hargrove in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft. His best season as a pro came in 2005, when he recorded 6.5 sacks with the Rams. From there, Hargrove's career was sketchy at best.

In August of 2007, The NFL suspended Hargrove for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Hargrove later failed another drug test. The NFL then suspended him from the league for a year in late January of 2008.

Hargrove was reinstated on February 23 of this year. He started working out for teams as he tried to land on a roster. The Saints officially signed Hargrove this week and released veteran DE Josh Savage to make room for the former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket.

After his days with the Rams in St. Louis, Hargrove was traded to the Buffalo Bills in 2006. Hargrove played in 22 games with the Bills. He racked up 42 tackles and three sacks. The 26-year-old Hargrove stands at 6-3 and weighs 272 pounds.

Hargrove could be introduced this Thursday at the Saints first open OTA made available to the media.
