Police: Suspected serial burglar pulls knife on gun-toting homeowner

The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office says a homeowner who shot an alleged burglar may have also helped solve a string of other burglaries.

According to a Sheriff's spokesman, a homeowner called 911 to report he had shot at someone attempting to burglarize the shop on his property.

When officers arrived at the home on Tyler Ballard Road in Walker, the homeowner said that he'd confronted the suspect, Charles Avants, as Avants was attempting to burglarize his shop.

The homeowner told police that the suspect "pulled a knife" on him. Police say the homeowner in turn pulled a firearm, and shot Avants in the arm.

According to investigators, Avants fled the scene to a nearby wooded area and was later located by deputies at North Oaks Hospital, receiving medical attention for the gunshot wound.

Sheriff Willie Graves says the 32-year-old suspect is believed to be responsible for several burglaries in the area as well as in St. Helena Parish.

Officers arrested Avants and charged him with aggravated burglary and simple burglary.

According to Chief Criminal Deputy Jason Ard, Livingston Parish Detectives and the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office are both still investigating Avants as a possible suspect in other area burglaries.

Ard told WWL First News that more charges and arrests are pending.
