Police say man crashed car into Harvey home

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's investigators say a man crashed his vehicle into a home in the Woodmere Subdivision this afternoon after apparently running from police, setting two houses on fire.

Colonel John Fortunado says a Deputy spotted the man driving with a young child standing on the seat of the Nissan Altima, unrestrained.

Fortunado tells WWL First News that when the Deputy turned on his overhead lights, the man threw a gun out of the car's window and sped away.

According to Fortunado, the next time the Deputy saw the car, it was buried in the side of a house in the 2500 block of Eastview Drive. Witnesses told investigators that the man fled the scene on foot with the child.

The vehicle apparently struck a gas main near the home, setting fire to the house and a home next to it.

No one was injured in the homes, according to Fortunado, but police do not know if either the man or the child were injured in the crash.

Sheriff's Department officials are asking anyone knowing the whereabouts of the man and child to contact the Sheriff's Department at 504-364-5600, or 911.

Fortunado said that investigators don't yet have a description of the man or the child.
