Expert matches Marinello's handwriting to checklist

An expert witness delivered more damaging evidence against New Orleans broadcaster Vince Marinello Saturday.

Forensic expert Robert Foley told jurors that handwriting on an apparent checklist found in Marinello's trailer matched other samples of the 71-year-old murder suspect's handwriting.

Police say Marinello made a list of things to do related to his wife's murder.  They say the checklist included items like "throw gun in river."

An expert also testified that investigators found gunshot residue on the steering wheel and elsewhere in a car prosecutors say Marinello was driving.

The D.A.'s office also presented evidence about Marinello's whereabouts the day of his estranged wife's shooting in Old Metairie.  They called on an expert on cell phone technology as they work to show that a cell phone tower in the area was communicating with Marinello's phone.

The trial is on recess until Monday.

Marinello, a longtime New Orleans TV and radio sportscaster and talk show host, is charged with the 2006 murder of his estranged wife.

Prosecutors are trying to convince a Lafayette jury that Marinello was the man who shot Liz Marinello in the face an Old Metairie parking lot.

Investigators contend that Marinello gunned down his wife while attempting to disguise himself as a homeless man.

According to courtroom testimony, the couple was going through a bitter divorce at the time of the shooting.

The judge in the case moved the trial to Lafayette because of pretrial publicity in the metro New Orleans area.  If convicted of murder, the 71-year-old Marinello will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.
