Mortensen: Saints players to fight suspensions, might win

The doping allegations against 3 of the New Orleans Saints star players will be the subject vigorous appeals and lawsuits as well.

ESPN senior writer Chris Mortensen, is not convinced that four week suspensions are a sure thing.

Mortensen tells WWL First News that the league, players union and the players are all upset.  He says they are pointing fingers because this type of story it's not supposed to be out there, for all to see.  Mortensen says, ''The league is upset because there was a leak, the union is upset because there was a leak.''

He says in many cases players win appeals or reach a compromise with the NFL, and we never hear about it because it's supposed to be handled in privately.

Mortensen said, ''They've agreed to hear the cases of McAllister, Grant and Smith as one; since they have the same representative, David Cornwell, and because they all claim to have used the same product.''

All three also claim they did not suspect they would be in violation by using this product. Mortensen adds that the NFL may not resolve this at hearing until early December or even later.  So, he doesn't think there will be quick suspensions, if there are suspensions at all.

All three players allegedly took banned diuretics that can mask use of steroids.  They are expected to argue that they were using a weight loss supplement that didn't list any banned substances.
