The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office today released details of a murder investigation that led them to an armed robbery ring which targeted Hispanics in Terrytown.
Sheriff's investigators arrested two suspects, 20-year-old Brandell T. Scie and 17-year-old Drevon James for the August 30 murder of Heriberto Montoya. Sheriff's officials say Hernesto Velasquez was shot during the crime.
"In this particular case, the two victims were illegal," said Sheriff Newell Normand. "(The suspects') belief was, in targeting illegals, was that they would not cooperate with law enforcement."
Normand says during the subsequent investigation, they learned of many more robbery victims in the neighborhood. The led homicide and robbery detectives to identify six suspects, including the two arrested on the murder charge.
Also arrested in the many armed robberies discovered during the investigation were:
-17-year-old William Smith
-18-year-old Dellon Battle
-23-year-old Elvin Ascension-Calcano
Authorities are still looking for 27-year-old Bertrand Jones. Anyone with information on his whereabouts are asked to call the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department homicide unit at 364-5300, or Crimestoppers at 822-1111.
