Nagin says the city showing great progress

In a press conference today, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said that conditions in the city continue to improve.

Nagin spoke about arrests made by the NOPD while the city continues to recover from Gustav.

According to Nagin, police mad 63 arrests for burglaries on Thursday, and 81 burglary arrests today.  He said that empty apartment complexes are apparently being targeted, with doors being kicked in while residents are still evacuated.

Nagin also said that there have been 38 looting arrests today, as well as 17 trespassing arrests.  "These were lootings that were averted," said Nagin, "where they were casing the homes."

The Mayor also said of the post-Gustav recovery:

 - Inspectors have now inspected 90 percent of the highrise buildings in the city.

 - Entergy continues to restore power to residents, with 70 percent of the city now with power.

 - Encouraged residents to call the 1-800-9-OUTAGE line if you don't have power, and your neighbors do.

 - About 4,000 residents who had used assisted evacuation have returned home so far, with another 4,000 expected by the end of the day.

 - City workers are embedded with Entergy crews, helping to remove tree limbs cut by crews.

 - 42 homes in the city are in danger of collapse.

 - Curfew: Starting Friday night, the curfew will now run from 10 PM to 6AM citywide, with the exception of these zip codes:  70112 70115 70116 70130.  These areas (Uptown, Downtown, and French Quarter) will have a 2AM to 6AM curfew.

 - Hospitals: All have power, with 75-80 beds available.

 - Sewage and Water Board:  23 of 28 drainage pumps are operational; all drinking water pumps are fully powered by Entergy.

 - For information on open grocery stores, the Mayor urged residents to visit Cityofno.com.
