The Louisiana Legislative Auditor's office today confirms that a federal grand jury is investigating possible violations of federal law by Mandeville Mayor Eddie Price and other officials.
Auditor Dan Daigle says it's been ongoing for months. "The subpoena was issued to us on April 1st, 2008. It basically asks for all documents, files, records and correspondence that we may have gathered through our audit efforts on the city of Mandeville," Daigle told WWL First News.
The subpoena reads:
"Please provide all records, documents, files, correspondence and computerized records regarding project number 50070024, the City of Mandeville, Louisiana. The obligation to provide records is continuing, that being as records, documents, correspondence and computerized records are obtained they are to be provided to the Grand Jury."
Daigle says the reason they have announced the subpoena now is because the attorney for Mandeville has been demanding the auditor return original documents.
He says they can't do that because the feds now have those documents. "We were obligated by subpoena to provide those to the federal government." Daigle says Mandeville officials know they can't return to originals. "We made them aware we are under a federal subpoena."

Daigle says they have returned copies to Mandeville officials.
