Poll: Moreno is top vote getter

Helena Moreno is on top in a new poll looking at the congressional election in New Orleans.

Her lead is slim, however, and there are a lot of undecided voters.

"The most striking thing about this poll is that the top four finishers are all within two and a half points of each other, which is well with the margin of error," says Analyst Clancy Dubos.

Moreno gets 15 percent in the Southern Media and Opinion Research poll.
James Carter is next with 13 percent.
Troy Carter and indicted incumbent Bill Jefferson get 12 percent.
Cedric Richmond and Byron Lee have 7 percent.
31 percent are undecided.

"It's still kind of early in the game, and I think what you're seeing is name recognition," says Dubos as to why Moreno is leading. "The problem that she faces is a growing perception that Bill Jefferson would love to have her as his runoff opponent, because in a majority black district his chances would then increase."

Troy Carter paid for the poll.
