Bob DelGiorno

Bob DelGiorno was born in Syracuse, New York, of Sicilian descent.  His paternal grandparents immigrated from Marcella, Sicily to the United States in 1912 via Ellis Island.  His maternal grandparents immigrated from Rome and Sicily around the same time.

From his father, Victor, a paving contractor, he learned early on the value of hard work.  He attended Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse and one year of college before serving in the Air Force.  In the Air Force, Bob soon discovered that he had a talent and love for broadcasting and was immediately called upon to work at Armed Forces Radio and Television.  His love for the profession blossomed and became his life-long vocation.  Back home in the early 1960’s, he for a small commercial radio station in Syracuse.  Moving to the Midwest, his radio career took him to stations in Flint, Michigan, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Chicago, Illinois.

In 1977, tired of the cold weather, Bob moved to New Orleans to accept a position at WWL radio, where hosted the morning show for four years. Listeners loved Bob’s bright, refreshing approach to the day’s news.  But, the “big time" came calling, and Bob eventually traded the Big Easy for the Windy City one last time—he took a gig doing mornings with NBC radio Chicago.  Once Bob lived up to his commitment in Chicago, he moved back “home" to the Crescent City, where he became entrenched in the local New Orleans media scene.  An avid outdoorsman, Bob began working for WDSU-TV Channel 6’s Morning Show and WVUE-TV Channel 8’s Evening News broadcasting fish and game reports.  He returned full time to WWL-AM in 1991 as the host of the station’s popular “Early Morning News."  Once again Bob became a household name in the Crescent City.  Currently, listeners across New Orleans and the Gulf South start their day by tuning into WWL First News with Bob DelGiorno and Monica Pierre.  It’s the most popular show in morning drive, and WWL has the ratings to prove it.  Bob has received numerous broadcast awards during his illustrious career and was inducted into the Greater New Orleans Broadcasters Association’s Hall of Fame.  As he says, “I am so proud of these awards, that I have dedicated a whole room to them in my home, appropriately called ‘The Hall of Me’."

As an avocation to his broadcasting career, and a testament to his enthusiasm for hunting and fishing, Bob founded the Louisiana Sportsmen’s Show in 1979.  The show, which is held annually in March at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, is currently one of the largest sportsmen exhibitions in the country and the largest show of its kind in the South.

A married father of three sons and eight grandchildren, Bob DelGiorno presently spends his leisure hours at his farm in Mississippi where he enjoys hunting and fishing along with the peacefulness of rural life.  On weekends, he can be found spending time with his wife, Pamela, and playing with his three dogs, Nick, a black Labrador retriever; and two Lahsa Apsos: Shotzie and Peachie.
