New Orleans gasoline average hits $4.00

Gasoline prices hit a new milestone in metro New Orleans today, according to the American Automobile Association's daily survey.

The average cost for a gallon for regular rose six-tenths of a penny overnight, according to AAA.  That pushes the price of gas beyond the $4.00 per gallon threshold for the first time.

New Orleans commuters told WWL First News that the steady rise in gas prices that began early in the year has led to changes.

"I'm actually buying a hybrid," said one woman as she filled her car's tank at a gas station in Gretna.  Another patron said he had to sell his Chevrolet Suburban.

"It would take about $150 to fill it up, so I had to sell it," he said.

"I went and got a four-cylinder.  The next step is a bike," said another motorists fed up with gasoline prices.

According to AAA, gasoline in New Orleans was a nickel cheaper one month ago, and one year ago it cost about $2.91.
