The City of New Orleans will today start issuing tickets at more intersections using "red light cameras."
Red light cameras currently installed eastbound (Lakebound) on Poydras Street at St. Charles Avenue, westbound (riverbound) Poydras Street at Magazine Street and westbound (riverbound) Poydras Street at Carondelet Street will become active today.
There is a $100 fine if a car is caught running a red light, along with a $35 enforcement fee.
Fines for speeding through the intersections range up to $200.
The cameras will also check for unpaid violations, which can incur be a $75 fine.
The new cameras are installed along Poydras at the cross-sections of St. Charles Avenue, Magazine Street and Carondelet Street.
Robert Mendoza, head of New Orleans Public Works, says an existing camera at the intersection of Poydras at Loyola has led to dramatically reduced incidents of people running the red light at that intersection.
