Carnival season kicks off with a variety of weekend events
It's Carnival time! The metro area starts to get in a Mardi Gras mood this weekend.
From float parades to walking clubs, a boat parade, kids' parade and a couple very adult parades...there's plenty of activity.
It gets started at noon Saturday on the Northshore.
"In Slidell, there's all kind of stuff," says Mardi Gras Guide publisher, Arthur Hardy.
"We've got Bilge, which is a boat parade, the new Poseidon, their second year in Slidell. And Mona Lisa and MoonPie at night."
He especially recommends the 1 p.m. Krewe of Poseidon parade.
"Poseidon is a parade as good many in Jefferson and some in New Orleans," says Hardy.
He says their debut last year was the most impressive new parade he's seen in years. "Last year, they really blew it out and I can't wait to see what they're going to do the second go-round."
He knows what will go on the French Quarter Saturday night when the Krewe du Vieux and Krewe Delusion take to the streets.
"These are very much adult-type parades..not for kids, but a whole lot of fun," Hardy says.
Krewe du Vieux spokesman Keith Twitchell agrees.
"The floats are going to be spectacular," he says. And, as long as you keep the kids' eyes covered from time to time, I think everyone will enjoy it.
The krewe rolls this year to the theme, 'The Crass Menagerie', and features plenty of politics, satire and adult humor.
And, yes, it can get a little naughty. "We're going to have glorious weather, so you'll likely see as much creativity but a little less cover on some of the costumes."
But, Sunday, there's parade just for the little ones, as the Krewe of Little Rascals rolls at noon in Metairie.
And, Sunday features two more parades in Slidell...the Krewe of Slidellians at 1 p.m. followed by Perseus.
