Armed robbery suspect shoots self at his Westbank high school

Investigators believe a 17 year old John Ehret High School sophomore shot himself in the school parking lot Monday afternoon, after his mother came to the school to confront him about his alleged involvement in a New Orleans armed robbery.

According to Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Investigators, 17 year old Quang Nguyen is a suspect in a Monday morning armed robbery in Carrollton. Investigators believe Nguyen went to the school to establish an alibi, only to be confronted by his mother who learned of the incident in New Orleans.

Police believe that Nguyen shot himself three times after being confronted by his mother, who then took him to West Jefferson Hospital for treatment. Nguyen is expected to recover.

Investigators say Nguyen and his mother gave several different stories of what led to the shooting, leading to obstruction of justice charges to be filed against both of them. Nguyen also faces charges for bringing a weapon onto school grounds.

Sheriff's officials stress that the incident had nothing to do with John Ehret High School, and nobody inside the building was in any danger. The building was never placed on lockdown.
