Mainieri says LSU knows its work isn't done at CWS
LSU coach Paul Mainieri needs to say only two words to remind his team about the pitfalls of celebrating a Game 1 victory in the College World Series finals: Fresno State.

The Tigers are within a win of clinching their sixth national title after defeating No. 1 seed Texas 7-6 in 11 innings on Monday night. Game 2 is Tuesday night.

Geller: Tigers never say die!
Well, game one of the series certainly did not disappoint.  I will be picking up some meds for my heart in preparation for the wild ride of Game 2.

Despite ace Louis Coleman surrendering five homers, despite committing their first error of the CWS on a wild pitch that allowed a run to score and despite being down to their last out and being down by two runs…Fightin’

Jeff: The Tigers are two wins from a national championship
Two super powers in college baseball meet tonight for the start of a best out of three championship series. LSU has 5 national championships, while Texas has 6. Brees touts Saints' high offseason attendance
New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees recalled an expression describing "experience" as "something you gain when you don't get what you want." The Saints haven't been to the playoffs in two seasons. And Brees saw a connection between those disappointments and higher attendance for voluntary workouts this offseason.

Glover's Five Shutout Innings Lead Z's To Victory

Kobe Bryant, Lakers capture 15th NBA title
Kobe Bryant has the NBA title he needed most - the one without Shaq. Bryant's seven-year chase of a coveted championship is over. He's got his fourth, and Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson his record 10th, a ring for each finger. One year after failing in the finals, Bryant and the Lakers have redemption, and all the rewards that go with it.
Collazo's Six Strong Innings Lead Z's To Win
Willie Collazo turned in another solid performance as the Zephyrs rebounded from Friday night's loss to beat the Oklahoma City RedHawks 7-3 Saturday night. The Zephyrs pounded out 12 hits and drew eight walks in the complete team effort.

Ochinko, Schimpf homer in LSU's 9-5 win over Cavs
LSU found another unlikely hero at the College World Series. No, Sean Ochinko's go-ahead three-run homer in the Tigers' 9-5 victory over Virginia on Saturday night didn't have the dramatic flair of Warren Morris' improbable winner in the 1996 championship game against Miami.
Zephyrs Score Season-High 10 Runs At Home

Lakers hang on for 101-96 win in Game 2
Lucky to have a second chance, the Los Angeles Lakers grabbed it. Kobe Bryant and Co. held on and are in control of the NBA finals - just barely. Orlando rookie Courtney Lee missed a potential winning layup as regulation ended, giving Los Angeles another shot it didn't waste. Pau Gasol scored seven points in overtime as the Lakers, so dominant in the series opener, survived 101-96.
Deke: A few injuries, D backs grab INT's and Devery scores
The New Orleans Saints gave us a couple of scares as they ended day two of their 2009 mini-camp with an afternoon practice.  The good news is that Jammal Brown and Pierre Thomas are OK, despite leaving the field. A little after 4:00pm Saints tackle Jammal Brown was gingerly walking to the Saints training room as many speculated what was wrong with him.
Tigers earn College World Series berth
Louis Coleman pitched eight strong innings, Derek Helenihi drove in two runs and LSU beat Rice 5-3 on Saturday to win the super regional and clinch the Tigers' 15th College World Series appearance. Kristian: Big crowd for mini-camp, D on fire, short yardage back found?
As the fans poured into Saints mini-camp, so did the players…with sweat.  Practice 3 of 5 is in the books for the Black and Gold this weekend. The morning session was spirited, perhaps aided by the strong contingent of Saints fans braving the heat and intense sun to watch their team.
Q and A with Jeremy Shockey at Saints Mini-Camp
Q: Can you talk about your first day at the minicamp? A: It's good to be back and get some work in. We have a long ways to go. It's our first mandatory minicamp. It's good to be here. Geller: Hungry Tigers look to feast on Owls
We are in store for some top notch baseball in Louisiana as LSU hosts Rice in the Super Regional at Alex Box Stadium this weekend.  The team that takes two out of three games earns a spot in this year’s College World Series. It’s the sixth time that the Tigers and Owls will meet in a Regional or Super Regional, and Rice is a perfect 6-0 against LSU.
Rice, LSU meet with return trip to CWS on the line
The crowds packing NCAA tournament games at LSU for the better part of the last two decades rarely have left disappointed.
Except, that is, when Rice comes to Baton Rouge. The Owls are in town again this weekend with a berth to the College World Series on the line.
Bryant's 40 lead Lakers in Game 1 rout
One step toward redemption, one step toward a ring. Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers began the NBA finals with power and purpose. Jeff: LSU vs. Rice Preview
The Super Regional series between LSU and Rice will be the sixth time these two programs have met in post-season play, and the Owls usually get the better of the Tigers. Rice defeated LSU in NCAA regional play in 1995 and 2005, and the Owls swept a super regional series against the Tigers in 2002.
Kristian: Saints start to answer questions
The fans get their first chance to see the 2009 Saints this weekend. The Black and Gold get back on the field this weekend for their first mini-camp of the season. The team has spent big money and time upgrading their bottom dwelling defense, and will put it on display Friday and Saturday.
Deke: Is it time or patience running out on Kobe?
He is the best player in the game today. He already won three NBA titles. He's been in the league for fourteen seasons, but at the tender age of thirty, his patience is running thin and his time is running out. Kobe Bryant is back in the finals for the sixth time in his career, and many say if #24 does not win it all this year, he may never win another one.
Lindsey's RBI Gives Z's Second Straight Walkoff Win
For the second night in a row, John Lindsey came through in a crucial moment for his team. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Lindsey was hit by a pitch from Albuquerque reliever Henry Bonilla, giving him the game-winning RBI for the second straight game. Deke: 2009 NBA Finals - Lakers in 6
Well, I guess half is better than none! I, like many, thought the finals would be a battle between the two best players in the game today. I still might be right about that one. Although I thought it would be Kobe versus LeBron, the 2009 NBA Finals looks to be one of the best match-ups in a long time.
Lindsey's Single Gives Z's Walkoff Win
John Lindsey delivered a one-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Zephyrs a 4-3 victory over Albuquerque Tuesday night. The win is the Zephyrs' first against Albuquerque in eight tries this season.
Saints sell out whole season again
Hurricane Katrina's devastation couldn't stem the tide of Saints fans ready to buy tickets when the NFL team returned in 2006 - and neither has the national recession. The franchise has sold out the 70,000-seat Louisiana Superdome for a fourth straight year, even as the overall cost of season tickets climbed and the metro area began hemorrhaging jobs.
Mark: Devery Henderson - finally settled
After catching 32 passes for the Saints in 2008 for an eye popping 24.8 yards per reception including 3 touchdowns, Saints wide receiver Devery Henderson made another big catch in the off-season--security. After playing out a one year deal for the '08 season, Saints management rewarded the 5 year veteran out of LSU a 4 year contract worth a reported 12 million dollars.
Deke: Superman's time to shine
Although this version is not known for leaping tall buildings at a single bound, he can jump out of the gym and take control of a game with the blink of an eye. Yes, I'm talking about "Superman"  ... the NBA's "Superman" ... Orlando's Dwight Howard. Ever since Howard was drafted out of high school in the 2004 NBA Draft he has progressed each season and has become the most dominant big man in the game today.

Jeff: No shortage of arms between LSU and Rice
If you are a big fan of gorilla ball, you might be disappointed with this weekend's Super Regional series between LSU and Rice. The two teams are loaded with pitchers, so expect more games like last Saturday when LSU edged Baylor 3-2 in 10 innings. Rice has a reputation of having top of the line pitchers, and this year is no exception.

Catcher Micah Gibbs’ four-hit performance led LSU’s 17-hit barrage as the Tigers stormed past Minnesota 10-3 to capture the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional title Sunday night at Alex Box Stadium. Express shut down Zeps 3-0
Yormen Bazardo was nearly unhittable Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field as the Express beat the Zephyrs 3-0. Bazardo (6-2) held the Zephyrs to two hits in nine innings while striking out six. The Zephyrs were unable to put together any offense against Bazardo, as the team failed to get a base runner past second base all game.
Jeff: LSU Wins Nail-biter
The new Alex Box Stadium is less than a year old, but the ball park has already witnessed a pitching performance for the ages. Kristian: Random thoughts on Spelling Bee, Calipari, LSU and Cavs-Magic
Hey sports fans, welcome to the cynical side of sports.  This is where I'll give you my take the week that was in the world of sports.  The Spelling Bee? Huh? SPORTS... S-P-O-R-T-S.  Could you use it in a sentence?  Yes I can.  Why is this on an all sports station?  The last time I checked sports didn't include spelling bees.

Ninth Inning Rally Leads Express Past Zephyrs
Daniel Barone turned in a solid start for the Zephyrs, and Cameron Maybin, John Lindsey and Andy Gonzalez each had RBI singles, but it was not enough as the Zephyrs fell to the Round Rock Express 6-3 Friday night at Zephyr Field. Barone pitched six strong innings for the Zephyrs, allowing only two runs on four hits. He left the game with the Zephyrs leading 3-2 after the sixth inning.

McAllister Nissan to liquidate assets
Deuce McAllister Nissan's days are over. Jeff: The road to Omaha begins for the Tigers
After a 56-game regular season and five fun-filled days in Hoover, Alabama, for the SEC Tournament. Omaha, Nebraska is within sight. Coach Paul Mainieri's team is just five wins away from reaching their destination and that's the College World Series. Everyone is expecting the Tigers to make it back to Omaha, but the team isn't feeling the pressure of trying to get back CWS.

New stadium, same results for LSU
LSU opened one of the premier ballparks in college baseball earlier this year with every intention of seeing the new Alex Box Stadium host its first NCAA tournament this spring. Presumptuous? Perhaps. Then again, the old Alex Box hosted 18 NCAA regionals since 1986, including last season, when LSU closed down the 70-year-old park with a victory that sent the Tigers to their 14th College World Series.
Zephyrs return home for 9 games

Deke: Roby could be Saints X-Factor in 09

Deke: 2009 NBA Playoffs rated "AG" - It's All Good!
If you look at the NFL, Major League Baseball and almost any other sport, oftentimes the biggest stars and the best players are not left standing during the most important part of the season.  Not true for the NBA playoffs.  The four best players in basketball are in it to win it, and that makes the 2009 NBA playoffs as good as I’ve seen in recent memory.
Saints deal bill wins passage in La. House

The Louisiana House approved a central piece of Gov. Bobby Jindal's deal to keep the New Orleans Saints in the state: a bill that would allow the state to lease office space from team owner Tom Benson. Bill killed to require student athletes get "C's"
Getting "D's" will still be good enough for kids to take part in sports at school. Opponents today killed an effort to require a "C" average for athletes. A bill by Rep. Ricky Hardy sought to raise the current minimum 1.5 grade point average to a 2.0. "If we raise the expectation for children, they will rise to the occasion."

Deke: Williams' Defense takes Saints from hunted to hunters
It's not even June and I can tell you that the Saints Defense is a lot better than they were a year ago. There are several factors contributing to the quick turnaround. New coordinator Greg Williams, the Saints commitment to defense in the last two drafts, and the health of key defensive players are all keys.
Jeff: Austin Ross likely starter against Southern
LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri and Pitching Coach David Grewe are still analyzing video tape of Minnesota, Baylor, and Southern but its likely the Tigers will keep the same rotation as they had in the SEC Tournament. Kristian: Saints might be one heck of a football team
The Saints are gearing up for mini-camp. The Black and Gold have completed their first practices of the 2009 season, and appear hungry for more next week. Organized Team Activities gave the Saints a taste of what's to come, and they seemed to like it. 8-8 and two straight seasons and watching the play offs at home, usually means changes in the NFL.
Jeff: The Tigers have a lot of confidence heading into the NCAA Tournament
Going into the SEC Tournament there was a concern the LSU Tigers wouldn't last long, because they didn't have anything to prove. They had already won the SEC regular season championship and the Tigers were in line to host an NCAA Regional and Super Regional if they advanced that far. But it turns out LSU had something to play for and that's build their confidence heading into the NCAA Tournament.
