Jeff: SEC Rankings The top 3 football teams in the SEC are holding strong, but we have new names moving up into the 4, 5 and 6 spots. Each week WWL's Jeff Palermo ranks the Southeastern Conference teams:
LSU and Bama both look to run and stop the run The question to be answered when LSU visits No. 3 Alabama this weekend is whether LSU's 267 yards rushing against the Tulan Green Wave was a sign of real improvement or simply a case of steamrolling an overmatched opponent.
Hornets topple Mavericks in OT Peja Stojakovic hit a game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of regulation and Chris Paul scored six of his 39 points in overtime, lifting the New Orleans Hornets to a 114-107 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.
LSU seeking to gain ground on Alabama Compared to recent years, LSU's ground game has run aground. The ninth-ranked Tigers are averaging 141.5 yards rushing, or 25 yards per game off their pace from a season earlier and 73 yards below their average in 2007. The only time LSU's had a 100-yard rusher in a single game this season was when Charles Scott did it last weekend in a 42-0 victory over Tulane.
Delhomme returns, but Panthers without healthy FB Jake Delhomme has recovered from a chest injury, but the Carolina Panthers are without a healthy fullback ahead of Sunday's game at New Orleans. Delhomme practiced Wednesday, three days after getting hit in the chest while throwing a pass in the win over Arizona. He was taken to a hospital for a CT scan, which showed no internal injuries.
Despite being 7-0, Saints have concerns Drew Brees sounds like a man who's embarrassed, and not because of all the compliments he's getting over the New Orleans Saints' perfect record through seven games. The Saints' past two victories have been riddled with errors, starting with eight turnovers, six of which were committed by the quarterback with four interceptions and a pair of fumbles.
Geller: Stop talking Pats and worry about Cats Listening to the majority of you Who Dats calling WWL on a daily basis and most of the media, you would think the Saints were playing the Patriots this Sunday in the Dome. I strongly advise that you take a page from the Black and Gold and not look past anyone.
Jeff: Les Miles sees no weaknesses with Alabama The LSU-Alabama rivalry looks to add another exciting chapter Saturday when the two teams meet in Tuscaloosa. The Fighting Tigers come into the contest playing their best football of the year, while the Crimson Tide is undefeated and should be well rested after not playing last weekend.
The Big Chief's NFL Top Ten - Week #9 Each week I post my top ten best teams in the NFL. Here's my top ten as we head into the ninth week of the NFL season. Only the Saints and Colts remain perfect. Some big ones this week have the Eagles hosting the boys, Steelers @ Denver and Baltimore visits Cincy. Take a look at this week's rankings below.
Deke: Saints finding ways to win In a sixteen game season it’s hard to look your best each week. But at the end of the day it’s about winning and it’s about surviving. The New Orleans Saints are doing both. The Saints had more gas in the tank than their rivals from the East and they improved their record to 7-0.
Big Chiefs CFB top 10 Well the Trojans are out of the hunt and the featured game this week is in Tuscaloosa as the Tide tangles with the Bayou Bengals. Someone will move up this week; and if Bama losses Boise State, Iowa, TCU and Cincy will all still be alive in the BCS Title hunt.
Saints fans enjoy a meal of "dirty bird" Black & Gold faithful were rewarded with yet another win by their beloved Saints, in a Monday Night Football matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. After the 35-27 win, fans filed out of the Superdome to spontaneous chants of "Who Dat" and "7 and 0!"
Hornets fall to 1 - 3 in loss to Knicks Chris Paul had season highs of 32 points and 13 assists for the Hornets, who were coming off a loss in Boston on Sunday night. Emeka Okafor added 24 points, his best game with New Orleans, and grabbed 10 rebounds. David West scored 21 points.
Jeff: The Saints are in seventh Heaven For the second straight week the New Orleans Saints fell behind early, but this time they didn’t wait for the 2nd half to rally. The Black and Gold scored 21 second quarter points and held on for a 35 to 27 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Saints stay perfect with 35-27 win over Falcons The Saints have tied their best start to a season. Drew Brees had 308 yards passing, Pierre Thomas scored two touchdowns and Jabari Greer returned an interception for a score to help the Saints improve to 7-0 with a 35-27 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night.
Bama-LSU prep for a Top 10 showdown Just another game. Or a top-10 showdown that could help set up a one-game playoff with Florida for a shot at the BCS national championship. The next one. Or an our-coach-is-better-than-yours statement game.
Saints fans ready to see the Falcons' wings clipped A Monday Night Football game in New Orleans qualifies as an unofficial holiday. Many Saints fans took the day off to set up their tailgate parties in parking lots and other vacant areas near the Superdome.
Hokie and Bobby: Tonight no repeat of 2006 MNF game This evening's matchup between the Saints and the Falcons have, at first blush, a lot of similarities: A Monday night game before an international audience, with an undefeated Saints team trying to keep Atlanta from making a play in the NFC South.
Deke: Saints - Falcons... "Lay ten and go with the home boys" They only get tougher each week and this is a tough game. This is a rival game and the Saints are playing a team that is desperate. Atlanta can't afford to get behind three games from the Saints.
Jeff: The good, bad and ugly from Saturday's 42 to 0 LSU win over Tulane LSU’s defense got the shutout it’s been looking for since the beginning of the season. The comparisons are starting to be made between this defense and the defenses that won national championships in 2003 and 2007.
Celtics beat Hornets 97-87 Chris Paul gets the individual accolades. Rajon Rondo has the team success. Together, it's enough to make each player a little envious. Paul outplayed Rondo on Sunday night, but the Celtics beat the New Orleans Hornets 97-87 anyway as Boston improved to 4-0 behind Paul Pierce's 27 points.
Saints embrace hype in MNF clash with Falcons Sean Payton would welcome a little deja vu. About three years and one month ago, the Saints played one of the most memorable games in franchise history at home on a Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons. It was the Saints' first game in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina and they looked invincible on that emotionally charged night.
Jeff: LSU shuts out Tulane and looks ahead to Bama The 9th ranked LSU Tigers treated themselves to a solid 42 to 0 win over Tulane on Halloween night. It was the first shutout for the Tigers since the 2007 national championship season when the Bayou Bengals blanked Middle Tennessee.
No. 9 LSU cruises past Tulane, 42-0
LSU can prepare for Saban Bowl III with a little more swagger. Brandon LaFell caught two touchdown passes, moving him into second on LSU's career list, and the ninth-ranked Tigers shut out Tulane for the first time since 1969, 42-0 on Saturday night.
Mark: Payton wants focus on next game, not Super Bowl game With the great success the Saints are having in the early going of the season, many fans and some of the media are talking Super Bowl. There is also a lot of chatter about home field advantage in the playoffs. Head coach Sean Payton is not ready to join that conversation.
Sharper looking sharp as ever at age 33
Darren Sharper takes some good-natured ribbing from teammates about his age and his supposed declining ability. When asked about Sharper's three touchdowns on interception returns this season, Saints strong safety Roman Harper deadpanned, "It's taken a lot of blocking to get him there."
Saints look to stay unbeaten against rival Falcons
Mardi Gras doesn't start until early February. It only seemed like a Carnival parade when the unbeaten New Orleans Saints returned to Louis Armstrong International Airport after their latest victory.
Paul and Okafor help lift Hornets past Kings Chris Paul scored 31 points and Emeka Okafor capped another strong performance by blocking Kevin Martin's tying 3-point attempt in the final seconds to help the Hornets beat the Sacramento Kings 97-92 on Friday night.
Kristian: Porter hurt as Saints prep for Falcons The Saints are in "game mode" as they get ready for their Monday night showdown with division rival Atlanta. On the injury front, the Saints walking wounded list grew by one player today. Cornerback Tracy Porter "did not practice" with a foot injury.
Hornets welcome fans back and look for a win The New Orleans Hornets throw a home opener party tonight at the New Orleans Arena. "We've got some extra entertainment value that will surround Halloween," the Hornets' Harold Kaufman told WWL First News.
Mark: Week 9 for High School Football Down to the last 2 weeks of the season teams are either fighting to earn playoff births, trying to improve their seeding in the playoffs or just hoping to finish out 2009 on a strong note.
Jeff: LSU-Tulane Preview The 9th ranked LSU Tigers face in-state rival Tulane for the 98th time on Saturday night, and it will be the last time these two teams play each other in Tiger Stadium for many years. The two schools decided to cancel a scheduled 10-game series back in September. They will play one more game in the Superdome, but a date has yet to be determined.
Cannon's run celebrated 50 years later When Billy Cannon first pulled on a purple and gold LSU uniform, he never figured he'd do anything on a football field that would last 50 years. By the time his college career was over, the star running back had won a national title (1958), a Heisman Trophy (1959) and his No. 20 jersey had been retired, making him the first LSU player to receive such an honor.
Saints: Evans out for the season The New Orleans Saints say fullback Heath Evans is out for the season. The team placed the 9 year veteran on injured reserve Thursday. He hurt his knee in the Dolphins game. The Saints picked up the free agent from the Patriots this season.
Kristian: Greer corners opposing offenses The Saints are off to a fast start standing atop the NFC at 6 and 0. They've gotten it done with an explosive offense and a ballhawking defense. It's a defense that added several key contributors during the off-season. The Saints signed Darren Sharper and Jabari Greer in the defensive backfield to get their hands on the football and prevent the big passing play.
Geller: Falcons QB expects "tough game" with the Saints The Saints (6-0) host the Atlanta Falcons (4-2) in prime time this Monday night. The Black and Gold look to take a commanding 3 game lead in the NFC South. New Orleans media got a chance today to talk with Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. He says he is well aware of how big this game is.
Can the Saints win them all? Bobby and Hokie sound off Can the Saints win every game this season? Saints running back Reggie Bush said, "Can we go undefeated? Yes." Former Saints running back and current WWL Saints color commentator Hokie Gajan says, "It probably is a goal. To say that it's realistic, I don't think so."
QB to QB - Drew and the Cannon talk Dolphins Drew Brees and our QB, the Cajun Cannon, had their weekly QB to QB chat on WWL SAINTSRadio. Drew talked about the Saints thrilling 46-34 come from behind win over the Dolphins and the Black & Gold's next game Monday night against the Falcons in the dome.
Hornets rebuilding, Spurs rebuilt? Other than Tony Parker crashing to the floor, it was everything the revamped San Antonio Spurs wanted for a season opener. Parker walked back to the bench OK after a hard landing in the third quarter, leaving the game with 17 points but with rookie DeJuan Blair and the Spurs already well in command of the New Orleans Hornets in a 113-96 victory on Wednesday night.
Bush: Saints can go undefeated for the season Could the Saints win all of their games this season? Running back Reggie Bush says, "Yes. It's gonna be fun. It's gonna be a fun ride. I'm just excited where we're at right now, 6 - 0. I'm on a great team right now. Everything is going well. We've got a great quarterback, a great group of guys on this team. Everything is good."
Geller: What Saints players do you want to send packing? What Saints players do you want to send packing? To the Pro Bowl that is. The game is not 'til January 31st, but voting started this and we should see plenty of Black and Gold helmets on the field in Miami this year.
Hornets start season at Spurs The New Orleans Hornets open their season tonight in San Antonio. While Hornets point guard Chris Paul looks to follow up what was arguably his best season - he averaged a career-best 22.8 points with league highs in assists (11.0) and steals (2.8) - he knows New Orleans is not among the favorites to come out of the West after its first-round playoff exit to Denver in the spring.
Payton: 6 - 0 "doesn't mean anything" On opening day in the NBA, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton chose a basketball analogy to illustrate how he feels about the second-best start in the 43-year history of the New Orleans Saints.
Many Northshore Hornets fans left out in the cold again this season Tonight's season-opener for the Hornets in San Antonio will be carried to a nationwide audience on ESPN. For customers of Charter Cable on the Northshore, such ESPN offerings might be the only televised Hornets games they will see this season.
Jeff: SEC Rankings Every week WWL.com's Jeff Palermo ranks the football teams in the Southeastern Conference. This week he's got Alabama, Florida, LSU and South Carolina holding tight on top. Ole Miss is the big mover, jumping up 4 spots, while Arkansas tumbles. Here's how Jeff sees the SEC stacking up:
Payton warns against making too much of fast start Sean Payton says the second-best start the New Orleans Saints have ever had doesn't promise anything. Next Monday night against Atlanta, New Orleans has a chance to match the 1991 Saints for the best start in team history at 7-0, which would also keep New Orleans atop the NFC.
The Big Chief's NFL Top Ten Here's my top ten as we head into the eighth week of the season. Only the Saints, Colts and Broncos remain undefeated. As predicted, the Vikings are no longer in the group. Take a look as this week's rankings below.
Jeff: Coach Miles believes the Tigers have the potential to be very explosive What a difference a win makes. The prospect of a 10-win season looks much better after LSU's solid 31 to 10 victory over Auburn. After the loss to Florida, LSU fans had deep concerns about the offense and quarterback Jordan Jefferson. But the sophomore rebounded by throwing a career-high 242 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Big Chief's CFB top 10 Florida (7-0) - The Gators beat Mississippi State last week despite not looking great. Maybe their rival can get them fired up this week. Last week they beat Mississippi State 29-19 / this week vs Georgia.
Miles embraces break from SEC play Les Miles says time is LSU's ally as the No. 9 Tigers prepare for the final three games of their Southeastern Conference schedule. The Tigers (6-1) get a break from conference play on Saturday night when they host struggling Tulane (2-5), a team coming off a 43-6 loss at Southern Mississippi.
Saints on record scoring pace The New Orleans Saints have been on a record scoring pace during their 6-0 start, and it isn't just their vaunted offense putting points on the board. Big plays by the defense were part of the reason the Saints scored 43 points in the last 30:02 minutes of Sunday's 46-34 victory at Miami. New Orleans' first touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery late in the first half.
Falcons fall 2 games behind Saints in division It is not too early for the Atlanta Falcons to say they are facing a must-win game if they hope to compete in the NFC South race.
The Falcons couldn't stop quarterback Tony Romo in Sunday's 37-21 loss at Dallas, and suddenly they're in danger of getting left behind in their division.
Hornets exercise option on swingman Wright The New Orleans Hornets have picked up swingman Julian Wright's option for the 2010-11 season. Wright, who is 6 feet 8, 225 pounds, is a former first-round draft choice entering his third NBA season and is expected to be in the starting lineup when the Hornets open the regular season at San Antonio on Wednesday night.
Monday Morning Quarterback with Drew Brees Saints QB Drew Brees dropped by WWL First News with Bob DelGiorno this morning to talk about the team's big 46-34 come from behind victory in Miami. Right off the bat Bob asked Drew about the key touchdown right before halftime. The Saints QB dove over the pile and started the comeback.
Hokie Gajan: Saints win was "just amazing" A big victory for the Saints, no doubt one of the best comebacks in team history. We've seen just the opposite happen in years past, when the Saints jump out to a big lead and then lose it. But in this case, it showed a lot of what this team is all about.
Video : Black and Gold fans welcome Saints home at airport As plane carrying the New Orleans Saints touched down at Louis Armstrong International airport 11:00pm Sunday night, a solid phalanx of fans lined the road connecting the team's terminal with Veteran's Boulevard.
Jeff: The Good - bad and ugly from LSU's 31 to 10 win over Auburn LSU's defense had another fantastic performance. They held Auburn to just 193 total yards, as the War Eagles averaged just 3.2 yards a play. The two things LSU struggled with coming into the game, they were able to correct. They sacked Auburn quarterbacks four times. They had zero sacks in their last four games. The Tigers also did well on third down. Auburn was 4 of 13 on third down conversions.
Deke: Now do you believe? If you were not in that number, and you still happened to be one of the folks that did not believe that the Saints were a legitimate Super Bowl contender before Sunday's amazing victory, you have to believe now! The New Orleans Saints are 6-0, and they have done everything a fan could possibly want in their first six games of the season.
Saints on MNF the hot ticket The 6-0 Saints are on a roll and the return home to the Superdome one week from tonight on Monday Night Football. Their opponent: the hated Atlanta Falcons, in a game that has been sold out for months, when season ticket holders once again grabbed almost every available seat months before training camp began.
Hornets swarm at the Square tonight Hornets will be swarming in downtown New Orleans later today. Fulton Square will host the New Orleans Hornets' first pep rally of the year to tip-off the start of the 2009-10 regular season.
Jeff: LSU wins by following a Saints style script The 9th ranked LSU Tigers took a page from the Saints playbook on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium. Build an early lead and force turnovers. That recipe led to an easy 31 to 10 win over Auburn.
Jefferson gets redemption, LSU beats Auburn 31-10 Jordan Jefferson followed the worst game of his young career with his best. Jefferson threw for a career-high 236 yards, including two touchdown passes, and scrambled for another score to lead No. 9 LSU to a 31-10 victory over Auburn on Saturday night.
Kristian: Behind enemy lines The Dolphins started out the 2009 campaign 0 and 3 and have since ripped off two consecutive wins against Buffalo and the New York Jets (two teams the Saints have beaten thoroughly). They lead the league in rushing average per game, and time of possession. Their defense is solid, but their secondary can be exploited. They stop the run well, but Drew Brees could have a big game again this week.
Clippers end preseason with 91-88 win over Hornets Al Thornton scored six of his 20 points over the final 1:23 and DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 91-88 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night in the preseason finale for both teams.
Nail-biters are the norm when Auburn meets LSU Auburn and LSU know a thing or two about thrilling, must-see football - a good deal of that knowledge comes from playing each other. It's hard to forget Demetrius Byrd's last-second touchdown catch against Auburn that helped propel LSU to an eventual national championship two seasons ago.
Vilma, Ochocinco and others face NFL fines Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma received a $10,000 fine Friday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Giants quarterback Eli Manning. Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco was fined $10,000 by the NFL for a uniform violation.
Mark: Prep football's 8th Friday night There are only 3 more Friday nights of regular season high school football. It starts with tonight's slate of games.
Hokie Gajan: Saints will win despite effective Miami wildcat They're probably number one because of their running backs. It was something that they devised last year. It's basically like the option offense in college. Nobody runs that anymore. It's just something that the Dolphins put in their package because they do have a Ronnie Brown and a Ricky Williams at the running back position.
Jeff: LSU should beat Auburn The 9th ranked LSU Tigers and Auburn meet for the 44th time on Saturday night in Death Valley. Both teams are trying to get back in the win column. Auburn has last two straight, while the Bayou Bengals fell to Florida in their last outing.
Deke: Look for the Saints to make it six straight I think we're all a little concerned about the Dolphins...due to a few factors. One, the Saints are coming off a huge win over New York, and this week they're taking on a team that's had two weeks to sit back and prepare for them. Two, anytime you go on the road and face a team that rushes the football as well as the Dolphins, that's plenty of reason for concern. But, if you look closely at the numbers, this match-up is as about as different as they come .
Saints use Bush to simulate wildcat in practice Reggie Bush enjoyed running a simulation of Miami's wildcat offense in practice this week - and said he even broke out a few long runs with it. But don't expect the New Orleans Saints to change what's led to their 5-0 start this season.
Brees and Saints focused on Miami Each week our QB Bobby Hebert goes one on one with Saints QB Drew Brees. This week the two signal callers hit on the Saints big 48-27 win over the Giants and also previewed this weeks Saints game against the Miami Dolphins.
Kristian: Dolphins are wild and Ricky is at his best
The New Orleans Media meets with the head coach and one player from the Saints opposition each week. This week all we wanted to talk about was "The wild cat." What makes it tick? What makes it so hard to defend? Why did the Dolphins decide to start running it?
Hokie Gajan: Miles "getting hard headed" about LSU QB's WWL.com : You've watched LSU for six games, and you saw what happened in Florida. They're 5 and 1, with 6 games to go. Realistically, after what you've seen for half a season, do they have a real shot to make it to Atlanta to be in the SEC championship game?
Saints O-line in synch on and off the field New Orleans lineman Zach Strief and Jon Stinchcomb stood side-by-side, feet shoulder-width apart. With nimble synchronicity, the lumbering duo tapped away in tandem on fake electric guitars while playing the video game Rock Band in the middle of the locker room.
Hornets hope Paul's supporting cast comes through Chris Paul doesn't expect the New Orleans Hornets to be favored to win the Western Conference, and he's fine with that. It was only two seasons ago that the Hornets went from not making the playoffs in 2006-07 to emerging as the surprise second-seed in the Western Conference playoffs in 2007-08.
Big Chief's NFL Top Ten - Week 7 Each week during the NFL season, I post my Top 10 - the ten best teams in the NFL. Here's my Top 10 as we head into the seventh week of the season. Can the Saints, Colts and Vikings all remain undefeated? One of them will go down this week!
Miles reasserts intent to work in Shepard With No. 9 LSU's offense at the bottom of the Southeastern Conference, gaining 295 yards per game, Les Miles found himself answering questions this week about his quarterback situation.
Geller: Saints success starts with O-line Throughout the NFL the guys protecting the quarterback typically go unnoticed, unless their field general is on his back the entire game. Here in New Orleans the Saints offense usually grabs most of the headlines, but the offensive line is left off the front page. All they've done is limit the opposition's defense to just 4 sacks this season, and work hard to keep #9 safe.
Mark: Saints can "climb higher than any team in New Orleans history" After two seasons of doing the chasing, the New Orleans Saints are one of the teams with a bull's eye on the back of their jerseys in 2009. Through six weeks of the NFL season the only 4 undefeated teams are the Colts, Broncos, Vikings and Saints.
Jeff: Top teams hold tight in SEC - Auburn slides While the top teams in the Southeastern Conference are holding their positions, LSU's next opponent is falling in the rankings. WWL.com columnist Jeff Palermo ranks the SEC teams every week. Here are his latest rankings showing Auburn dropping three spots:
New ticket plan to shut out scalpers Promoters of big events are tired of ticket scalpers buying up seats as soon as they go on sale, then jacking up the prices and reselling tickets. Officials at the New Orleans Arena are trying something new tonight to shut out the scalpers.
Big Chief's CFB Top 10 - Week #7 The Gators offense is struggling and they've put their defense in tough situations in each of the last two weeks. Better get it together before the SEC Title game! Last week Florida beat Arkansas 23-20 / this week @ Mississippi State.
Jeff: Coach Miles wants more deep passes The bye week came at a good time for the 9th ranked LSU Tigers, who rank 112th in the nation in total offense. It gave the coaches a chance to take a long look at what they are doing on offense, and how they can move the ball more efficiently.
Saints getting tougher on both sides of the ball Drew Brees looked across the line of scrimmage and liked what he saw. It was the Saints' defense, trying to make each practice of training camp as miserable as possible for New Orleans' star quarterback, the offensive line, the running backs and receivers.
LSU primed to get back in the SEC race LSU has reached the halfway point of its regular season schedule with a 5-1 record and is ranked No. 9 in the country, moving up one spot this week despite not playing.
Kristian: Saints marching forward The Saints now turn from hunter to hunted. New Orleans is 5 and 0 to start the 2009 season. They are also on the heels of a convincing win over what was once considered to be the best team in the NFC in the New York Giants.
Saints fans beyond just believing - starting to dream A sound drubbing of what was supposed to be the toughest rival in the NFC has Saints fans happily stunned. After the 48-27 home victory of the Giants, fans of the Black & Gold seemed to be starting to forget years of faulty starts, and starting instead to dream of the Big Prize.
Deke: Notice served ? Saints 5 and 0 Turkey shoot...butt whippin'...taken out to the woodshed...are just a few slogans Who Dats use to describe what the New Orleans Saints did to the New York Giants in the Superdome. The G-Men from the Big Apple came way down yonder to New Orleans...and simply put, found out who really is the best team in football.
Brees reaches 100 TDs as Saints QB Drew Brees threw his 100th touchdown pass for the New Orleans Saints during the first half of Sunday's game against the New York Giants, reaching the mark in only his 53rd regular-season game with the club.

Kristian: Saints and Giants hope to make statements The New York Giants have been where the Saints want to go. They've been in big games, they've been in the biggest of games and won the world championship.
Heightened security at Superdome for the rest of the season According to Doug Thornton with the Louisiana Superdome, Saints fans can expect heightened security to continue at all home games for the rest of this season. "We are going to continue this through the end of the year," Thornton said.
Jeff: Five games to watch on an LSU free Saturday LSU is not playing Saturday, but they picked a good time to take a weekend off. There are four games on Saturday that feature two teams ranked in the Top 25. Here are five games you can't miss.
Drew and Bobby - QB to QB on Saints vs Giants! Saints QB and WWL QB Bobby Hebert went one on one about the Black & Gold's preparation for this week's game against the 5-0 New York Giants. Drew first addressed the Saints off week and how he thinks it will help New Orleans. "It was good. We got more time off than we have in the past and it gave us time to rest and get ready for the Giants game and the rest of the season."
Big Chief's NFL Top Ten - Week 6 Each week during the NFL season post my Top 10 best teams in the NFL. Here's my Top 10 as we head into week six. The match-ups to pay attention to: the Giants @ the Saints and the Ravens' visit to Viking country.
Mark: Shockey ready to face his former team When the Saints line up on the Superdome turf on Sunday against the New York Giants, New Orleans tight end Jeremy Shockey will see a lot of familiar faces across the line of scrimmage.
Manning finally getting a chance to play in Dome Mention the Saints and the city of New Orleans and the memories come quickly for Eli Manning. The youngest son of Saints legend Archie Manning, Eli Manning went to the Superdome almost every weekend the Saints were home, and his father even took him to a road game every now and then.
Deke: Why the Giants are undefeated Yes, they are arguably the best team in football right now and many have their reasons why. Some say New York is perfect thus far because of their offensive balance. Others point to the play of QB Eli Manning, the Giants' potent rushing attack, their emerging wide receivers or their tenacious defense. All of those things are true, but two things stand out to me when breaking down the G-Men.
Eli Manning Practices on Limited Basis Eli Manning is only taking the snaps his coaches think are most important to get him ready for the New York Giants' showdown with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
Geller: Eli's Dome-coming There are a few storylines to follow this Sunday when the Saints host the Giants. It's a battle of two undefeated teams, tight end Jeremy Shockey is facing NY for the first time since the Giants traded him to New Orleans and Eli Manning comes home to play his first game in the Dome. Talk about must see TV.
Jeff: Bama still the best - LSU holds tight in SEC rankings Each week, WWL.com columnist Jeff Palermo ranks the teams in the Southeastern Conference of college football. Here is how he sees the teams in the SEC stacking up right now.
Shockey says no vendetta vs. Giants Jeremy Shockey was adamant, as he's been known to be. The matchup of the 5-0 Giants and 4-0 Saints is not about him, or his unhappy, injury-plagued last season in New York, or any kind of payback.
Sports industry leaders meet in New Orleans Part of New Orleans' sports future could be decided this week. The TEAMS Conference & Expo kicks off in New Orleans' Morial Convention Center and the Superdome today.

You can be a person who stares at life through Purple & Gold glasses and just despises anyone who says anything other than the Tigers are GRRReat! Or ,you can be a flat out hater.

Jeff: The good, bad, and ugly from LSU's 13 to 3 loss to top ranked Florida LSU's defense played remarkably well against a very difficult offense to defend. The 13 points were the fewest the Gators have scored since 2005. The linebackers continue to play well, Kevin Sheppard had 13 tackles, while Perry Riley had 12 stops and two pass break-ups. This defense is good enough for LSU to go 10-and-2 for the regular season.

These Saints more balanced than past squads Sean Payton's reputation as a creative and effective offensive strategist has been well establish during his first three seasons as head coach of the New Orleans Saints. |
Saints fans flying high on 4-0 start Following the 24-10 victory over the New York Jets, most fans at the Superdome were ecstatic over the best start by the Black & Gold since 1993. "Black and Gold are Super Bowl bound, baby!", one man shouted as he exited Gate A.
Saints retailers being blitzed Saints fans can't get the Black and Gold off their minds...or their backs. The sale of Saints gear is in high gear. Pam Randazza at the Black & Gold Shop in Metairie says it almost equals the 2006 season. "It's much better than last year...not quite as good as when we came back from the storm. But that was just a really crazy year."
Deke: Saints Variety Pack bests Jets 24-10 After last week's win over Buffalo, many started to compare the 2009 Saints to the 2006 NFC Champion Saints. Those comparisons are way too unfair especially at this point in the season, as we have just wrapped up week number four.
LSU's Charles Scott played with "controlled rage" in win over Georgia For most of the day, it was a defensive struggle. Then, with the clock winding down, LSU and Georgia started trading touchdowns as though the defenses weren't even on the field.
Jeff: Good, bad and ugly from LSU's 20 to 13 win over Georgia ESPN's Lou Holtz said it best last Thursday night when he picked the Tigers to beat Georgia. He said LSU just knows how to win, despite the fact they can't run the football or pass it. Fans have been waiting for this team to establish an identity. I would say their identity is a team that refuses to lose.
No. 4 LSU rallies late, holds off No. 18 Ga. 20-13 Charles Scott scored on a 33-yard run with 46 seconds remaining to cap a wild finish that gave No. 4 LSU a 20-13 victory over 18th-ranked Georgia on Saturday.

Ross Thevenot has ached to redeem himself before thousands of cadets for a long time. He made the most of his final opportunity.
Deke: Lay the seven points, Saints will win big To some this undefeated match-up is somewhat of a surprise, but Saints Head Coach Sean Payton is not at all surprised about the Jets' fast start. Back in July, prior to the start of training camp, Sean Payton was asked by Sports Illustrated's Peter King about what non-playoff team could make the leap to the post season in 2009.
Saints fans urged to arrive extra-early Sunday due to enhanced secuirty Officials with the New Orleans Saints and the Louisiana Superdome say a league-wide increase in security measures at all NFL venues may mean longer waits to get in the gates for this Sunday's matchup with the Jets.
Jeff: What to watch for in the LSU - Georgia game The LSU Tigers will have a chance to prove they are the 4th ranked team in the country as they visit 18th ranked Georgia. The Bayou Bengals are also seeking their first win in Athens since 1987. Here are 5 things to keep an eye on Saturday.
Kristian: What's the one word that best describes the 2009 Saints? You can almost feel it, you can definitely see it in the 2009 Saints team. They are 3 and 0 headed into this weekend's match up against the AFC East leading New York Jets. You can feel the confidence in the team, you can feel the swagger with which this team is playing.
High School Football at the halfway point As the calendar changes the page from September to October and the weather turns cooler, the games get bigger on the prep gridirons of Louisiana. Friday #5, the midway point of the prep football season is here.
Saints' Payton, Jets' Ryan are aggressive gurus
Call it a meeting of the masterminds in New Orleans. The Jets' Rex Ryan has made a career of creating aggressive, unpredictable defenses that keep opposing coaches guessing. The Saints' Sean Payton has done the same with his air-it-out offenses, putting up tons of yards and points in every way imaginable.
Jones fulfilling promise on LSU's defense
Chad Jones had a tough choice.
The Houston Astros had drafted him out of high school, a thrill for a kid who made no secret of his love for baseball. Yet, he was an excellent football player and LSU was prepared to let him play both sports, meaning he'd get to line up on the gridiron with his brother, Rahim Alem.
Miles: "I could give a rat" LSU head football coach Les Miles is getting fed up with everyone asking him about the Tiger's 4th place ranking in the major college football polls. "I could give a rat about a 4th ranking in the country. I just want you to know," Miles declared during his radio show on WWL.
Kristian: Jets respect Saints - but they're not scared The Jets head coach talked with the New Orleans media this week, the first words out of Rex Ryan's mouth were, "Please tell me Drew Brees is not playing." Of course Ryan was kidding, but it shows the respect they have for Krew de Drew. The Media meets with the head coach of the Saints opponent each week, and typically there isn't a lot of colorful moments, but this one was different.
Jets' secondary banged up before Saints game New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis and safety Kerry Rhodes were limited in practice Wednesday with injuries that aren't expected to sideline them against the New Orleans Saints. Revis (hamstring) and Rhodes (knee) didn't appear to be noticeably hobbled during the 40-minute window of practice the media are allowed to watch.
Georgia playing too loose with the ball Georgia is defying conventional football wisdom, which goes something like this: The team that turns the ball over the most usually loses the game. The No. 18 Bulldogs have a total of 12 fumbles and interceptions through their first four games, but they've managed to win three times heading into Saturday's crucial Southeastern Conference game against No. 4 LSU.
Tighter security at Sunday's Saints game New Orleans Saints fans are being encouraged to arrive at the Louisiana Superdome on Sunday earlier than normal because of increased security measures.

Saints' running game gaining steam, and confidence ierre Thomas was in no shape to celebrate. He'd been sick for about a week with a stomach virus that had him vomiting the night before last Sunday's game at Buffalo. On the joyous plane ride home following the Saints' 27-7 victory over the Bills, he only wanted to close his eyes and rest, but his teammates had a hard time leaving him alone.
Geller: Saints ground game ranked 2nd Seeing the Saints offense ranked 1st in the NFL comes as no surprise. What is eye popping is that the running game is currently ranked #2 in the league. The Saints are averaging 170.7 yards a game.
Jeff: Bama leapfrogs Florida in SEC rankings Who are the top football teams in the Southeastern Conference? WWL.com's Jeff Palermo ranks them every week. This week he says the two teams leading the way in the SEC flipped positions this week.
Big Chief's NFL Top 10 Week #4 Each week I post my Top 10 teams in the NFL. Here's my Top 10 as we head into the fourth week of the season. Newcomers include Denver and Cincinnati with the Patriots making their way back in the Top10! The biggest match-ups this week involve ranked teams...as the Saints host the Jets and the Ravens visit the Patriots.
Chifici: Saints are not looking back at 2006 Do you remember the last time the New Orleans Saints started off a season at 3-0? It was not too far back, the magical post Katrina season of 2006 (10-6 record and a trip to the NFC Championship Game).
Jeff: Miles is not giving up on the running game The most baffling part of this undefeated season for LSU has been its running game. It hit rock bottom this past Saturday, when the Tigers rushed for 30 yards against Mississippi State.
LSU still undefeated and still uneasy
LSU head coach Les Miles is trying to be fair. Miles doesn't like the inconsistency with which the Tigers have played, but he doesn't want to be too critical of a squad that is 4-0 and ranked fourth in the nation, either. "We have played four games and we have four victories," Miles said Monday. "We certainly are where we want to be. But, we certainly want to improve along the way."
Monday Morning Quarterback with Drew Brees Well Who Dats there is no denying that the Saints are truly playing like a team. So what that Brees didn’t put up video games numbers, the black and gold put together quite a performance on defense and had eye popping numbers running the ball.
Florida coach thinks Tebow will be ready for LSU Florida coach Urban Meyer says he thinks quarterback Tim Tebow will play in the top-ranked Gators' next game, against No. 4 LSU on Oct. 10. Meyer said Monday that Tebow has a headache, but is eating well. He thinks - but doesn't know - that his star player will be ready to go against the Tigers.
Big Chief's CFB Top 10 - Week 5 For the fourth straight week another shake up took place in the nation's Top 10. Three teams fell and fell hard. Now teams, who suffered losses and dropped out of the Top 10, are back already in national contention. And, by the way, this season is crazy.
Saints fans start to let themselves... Believe A solid, sound 27-7 victory on the road in front of a hostile Buffalo Bills crowd has many Saints fans looking far past the regular season. "We're going to the Super Bowl," said one Metairie fan at a daquari shop on Vets. "They just seem so unstoppable." Other fans were even a bit more blunt.
Jeff: Saints win, go 3-0 and own 1st place
The New Orleans Saints won the first two games of the season with their offense, Sunday showed they could win with defense. The Buffalo Bills failed to score an offensive touchdown as the Black and Gold won 27 to 7. The Saints defense held Buffalo to 243 total yards. Controversial wide receiver Terrell Owens didn't catch a pass. Running Back Fred Jackson, who had 163 yards last week, only had 71 yards. The defense also had four sacks.
No. 4 LSU has work to do with Ga., Fla. next up
LSU coach Les Miles' words were the kind no football player wants to hear. Especially after a win. "The team better show up at home on Monday ready to work," Miles said. Sure, the Tigers beat Mississippi State 30-26, remained undefeated and jumped from seventh to No. 4 in the Top 25. But it was the kind of game that leaves a coach worried his team could be the next contender to lose.
LSU moves to #4 in both major polls Coming off a hard-fought, but often sloppy, win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs, the LSU Tigers have advanced to #4 in the nation in both the AP and Coaches' polls. LSU was #7 in both major polls last week. The Tigers won Saturday, beating Mississippi State 30 to 26.
Saints defense comes up big in 27-7 win over Bills Turns out Drew Brees doesn't have to throw a touchdown pass - or put up 45 points - to secure a victory. The New Orleans Saints' overlooked defense proved pretty stout. Will Smith had a sack and an interception to lead a Saints defense that held Terrell Owens without a catch for the first time since his rookie season in 1996 on the way to New Orleans' 27-7 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
LSU to break the top 5?
The LSU Tigers figure to move into the ranks of the top 5 teams in the college football. LSU was #7 in both major polls last week. The Tigers won Saturday, beating Mississippi State 30 to 26.
Tulane gets first win, beats McNeese Andre Anderson rushed for four touchdowns and Tulane beat McNeese State 42-32 on Saturday. Anderson carried 28 times for 199 yards and scored on runs of 2, 11, 63 and 2 yards for the Green Wave (1-2). Joe Kemp was 10-for-13 passing for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
Late goal-line stand lifts No. 7 LSU to 30-26 win No. 7 LSU stuffed Mississippi State at the goal line for a 30-26 victory Saturday. Brandon LaFell had 101 yards and two touchdown catches and Chad Jones scored on a 93-yard punt return for the Tigers (4-0, 2-0 SEC). Anthony Dixon couldn't score on two attempts from inside the 3 with a minute to go. LSU then stuffed quarterback Tyson Lee on fourth and inches.
Deke: Saints - Bills preview The Last time these two teams met in the regular season the game was held in San Antonio due to Hurricane Katrina. The Saints beat the Bills for one of their three wins in 2005. Saints Quarterback Drew Brees needs just fifty-two yards to pass former QB Bobby Hebert for third place in passing yards in Saints History.
Bell and Moore out for Buffalo game The New Orleans Saints will not have running back Mike Bell or wide receiver Lance Moore for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills. Bell, who injured his knee against the Eagles last week, is averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Coach Sean Payton was coy about who would replace Bell for Sunday's game at Buffalo.
Prep Football season nearing the halfway point The 2 seasons that seem to go by the fastest are summers for students who enjoy their break from school and football season which seems to fly by for all of the gridiron junkies. And here we are already into week #4 action of the ten week prep football season.
Perrilloux's bittersweet homecoming Ryan Perrilloux will be on familiar territory Saturday, the bayous of south Louisiana where his name sparks memories of a stellar high school career. Perrilloux will take the field for the Jacksonvile State Gamecocks against Nicholls State in Thibodaux, a long way from where the former LSU quarterback expected to be.
Jeff: LSU - Mississippi State preview LSU has one more tune-up before the schedule gets much more difficult. Here are five things to look for when the Tigers and Bulldogs meet for the 103rd time.
Saints head to Buffalo for game 3
The New Orleans Saints' offense has certainly been the NFL's most impressive through the season's first two weeks, but the Buffalo Bills may have the league's most surprising unit. As a result, Sunday's interconference matchup at Ralph Wilson Stadium has the makings of a potential shootout, but the Bills will face a tall task trying to slow down Drew Brees and the unbeaten Saints' high-powered attack.
Greer says New Orleans was best possible option Jabari Greer rattles off the names of Frenchmen Street music clubs with unusual ease for someone who hasn't been in the Big Easy for long. It's one example of what the Saints' new starting cornerback is talking about when he says signing with New Orleans "was by far the best possibility for me."
Kristian: Balance no longer lip service for the Saints We've heard the mantra of balance before, but we hadn't seen any evidence until now. Saints fans grew increasingly frustrated with the lack of balance on offense last year. It was hard to argue with the success of the Saints offense considering they were the league leader in almost every offensive category except rushing attempts and rushing yards per game.
Geller: Saints D living up to hype All the talk this offseason was about new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams bringing an aggressive, turnover hungry defense to New Orleans. Well, in just two games the team is proving what a difference a coach can make by creating seven turnovers (6 interceptions & 1 forced fumble on special teams) while cruising to a 2-0 start.
Shanle didn't need INTs to feel secure with Saints Scott Shanle may be the last person to get caught up in his sudden surge in popularity, resulting largely from the first two interceptions in his seven-year career. "Darren Sharper - what's he at, 57 now?" Shanle said after practice this week. "I've got 55 more to go to tie him."
Jeff: SEC Rankings Each week, WWL's Jeff Palermo ranks the football teams in the Southeastern Conference. Here is how he sees the schools stacking up on the grid iron: 1. FLORIDA (1) Last Week: Beat Tennessee 23 to 13 - This Week: At Kentucky. Not a very impressive win over Tennessee, but Coach Urban Meyer is blaming the flu bug. Many are saying Tim Tebow has a chance to win his second Heisman Trophy, but his game against the Vols won't help.
Big Chief's NFL Top 10 -Week 3 Each week during the NFL Season I will post my top ten of who I think are the ten best teams in the NFL. Here's my top ten as we head into the third week of the season. Carolina, San Diego, and New England are gone while Atlanta, the New York Jets, Minnesota and the 49ers make their first appearance in the Top 10. And remember, what I said the first two weeks - do you think Tony Romo is that good? Three picks versus the G-Men shows he's not ready yet!
Mark: The Saints offense is the best and wants to get better The stats are gaudy. The Saints are first in the NFL in scoring (46.5 points per game), first in total offense (468 yards per game), second in passing (323 yards per game) and 8th in rushing offense (145 yards per game). The "Black & Gold" can also boast in a quarterback (Drew Brees) who has completed 75% of his passes and thrown for 9 touchdowns in the team's 2-0 start.
Jeff: Miles says LSU can play better LSU is 3-and-0 on the season, ranked 7th in the country, and they've outscored their opponents by a combined score of 85 to 35. But Coach Miles is not happy. "We want to improve, and we don't want to stop at good," Miles said. "We want to be better than good. I challenged my team with that premise. I congratulated them with victory, but certainly we want to do better."
Saints trying to stay grounded after stellar start At this rate, Drew Brees could throw for 72 touchdowns this season, a seemingly preposterous total that would obliterate the record 50 TD tosses Tom Brady threw in 2007. The New Orleans Saints quarterback would rather steer clear of such talk, turning his focus to team goals.
Monday Morning QB with Drew Brees ? Week 2 Saints/Eagles
Every week after Saints game-day, Drew Brees joins WWL’s Bob DelGiorno at 7:40am for “Monday Morning Quarterback," recapping that weeks match-up. This week the red hot Brees talked about going into Philadelphia and not only coming away with a win, but demolishing the Eagles 48 – 22.
Mike Bell calls knee sprain "nothing serious" New Orleans Saints running back Mike Bell says an MRI on his injured knee shows a sprain, but he describes it was somewhat minor injury. So, does he expect to play Sunday in Buffalo?
Big Chief's CFB top 10 - Week 4 More big surprises last week as USC fell to Washington and so long to BYU. An oldie but goodie emerges this week in the Canes of Coral Gables. Miami is in position to gain the most speed with Va. Tech and Oklahoma the next two weeks. The SEC is taking over the Top 5 of my poll!
Deke: Black and Gold Impressive against Eagles Yes, all that talk about the Saints looking good only because they beat a miserable Detroit team can be squashed. New Orleans dominated the Philadelphia Eagles - a serious Super Bowl contender this season. The Saints defense took another step forward, and they beat the Eagles at their own game.
Hope springs eternal for fans of the Black and Gold A 48-22 victory on the road for the Saints may put teams around the NFL on notice that New Orleans is a contender, but many local fans tell WWL First News that this could actually be "the year."
Jeff: The good, bad, and ugly from LSU's 31 to 3 victory over ULL The defense continues to show improvement. Even though the Tigers didn't have any sacks, they constantly put pressure on the ULL quarterback. The tackling has also improved since game one. There was also some good individual performances. Harry Coleman had 8 tackles and a forced fumble. Chad Jones intercepted two passes.
Jeff: Saints send message with win over Eagles The New Orleans Saints sent a message to the NFC and the rest of the NFL with a convincing 48 to 22 victory over Philadelphia Eagles. Quarterback Drew Brees was sensational again, completing 25 of 34 passes for 311 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. It was Brees’ 32nd career 300-yard passing game...

Les Miles Vanderbilt Post Game Interview I certainly enjoyed the victory. Winning is the key piece. I think any time you play imperfectly, and you come to the post-game, you have to recognize that first things first. You’d much rather win than do any other thing that we got, so that being said, I think we have to play better.
QB Jordan Jefferson on Vandy Victory As of right now, we’re looking really good. Our defense gave us a lot of opportunities to be on the field. We’re looking to excel week after week. Personally for me, I learned a lot from last week. I thought I did a good job of reading Vanderbilt’s defense and progressing the game plan as much as I could. I’m still learning, though, and still trying to progress as a good quarterback.
Jeff: D steps it up, but O stumbles in LSU win over Vandy Last week it was the defense that LSU fans were complaining about, this week it will be the offense. But at least LSU got the win, beating the Vanderbilt Commodores 23 to 9. LSU had 232 total yards in the first half, with a balanced attack of 122 yards on the ground and 110 through the air. But the second half was a different story as the Tigers could only muster 94 yards of total offense.

The Commodores (1-1, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) trailed by only one touchdown midway through the fourth quarter as they attempted to win in Tiger Stadium for the first time since 1951.

Jeff: 5 things to look for when LSU opens its SEC schedule against Vanderbilt LSU's supposed new and improved defense didn't live up to expectations in last week's win over Washington. The coaches and the players have promised a better performance against Vanderbilt. But the Commodores offense presents some challenges. They run a no-huddle offense, they had two running backs who rushed for over 100 yards last week, and Vandy also has a mobile quarterback.

The long flight to Seattle, the late kick-off, and Huskies Quarterback Jake Locker to name a few. But one of the biggest problems was the amount of time the defense spent on the field. Washington ran 83 plays, compared to LSU's 48. The Huskies had the ball for nearly 14 more minutes than the Tigers.
