Area of disturbed weather getting some people riled up

Updated 5:50pm

The National Hurricane Center says an area of disturned weather in the Atlantic has not gotten orgranized.

"Data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that the circulation associated with the small low pressure area approaching the Leeward Islands is poorly defined.  In addition, the associated shower activity has decreased during the past few hours," government forecasters said in a statement late Thursday.

Officials say there were some strong winds withing the unorganized system.

"The aircraft did, however, find a small area of tropical-storm-force winds on the northeast side of the low.  Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for some development during the next day or so, and a tropical depression or tropical storm could still form while the system moves west-northwestward."

Internet chatter has exploded with discussions about this area of disturbed weather.

"It's unfortunate that sometimes people post stuff on line and get people all fired up and alarmed," WWL TV Meteorologist Laura Buchtel said.  "We get these little tropical waves all the time."

She says it's not clear why some people are getting so worked up about this system, that has struggled to develop so far.

"It's an area that they are watching for possible development," she explained.  "Some of the models show it not developing at all."

The National Hurricane Center has been giving the area of disturbed weather a 50-50 chance of tropical development through Saturday.  Federal forecasters say conditions could improve for possible development in the next five days.

"Do not worry about it, just keep an eye on it," Buchtel urged. "It's nothing to freak out about."

She also noted that it is also too early to write it off.
