"Are you from around here?" If you ask people in Louisiana, the vast majority will say, "Yes."
Recent analysis by the New York Times found that 79% of Louisiana residents were born in Louisiana. That is the highest percentage of native born residents anywhere in the country.
"Four-point-six million people disproportionally want to be here," explained Demographer Elliot Stoneceipher.
He says while some people would leave the state if they had to means to go elsewhere, that is by and large not the case.
"There are a lot of people here who could leave if they wanted to, but haven't."
Stoneceipher says when you combine a lot of people who are very happy to live in Louisiana with historical shortages of new people moving into the state, the result is nearly four out of five residents who were born in Louisiana.
