The National Hurricane Center is watching a tropical disturbance in the Atlantic that has a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours. Models show the tropical wave move through the Caribbean in the coming days.
There is currently a 50 percent chance of development by Friday and 60 percent chance after that.
State climatologist Barry Keim says it’s not a surprise to see the tropics getting more active this time of year.
Keim says we’ll need to start keeping a close eye on the tropics as we are heading into the busy part of the season.
At this point, there’ve only been two named storms this year and NOAA has predicted there's a good chance we'll see a below normal season.
Keim says a developing El Nino weather pattern has suppressed tropical activity.
