Freighter smacks into tanker and barge near Gretna

The U.S. Coast Guard says a 623-foot-long bulk freighter lost power and steering control and crashed into an oil tanker and a barge early this morning in Gretna.

Coast Guard spokesman Jonathan Lally says the Flag Gangos was headed down-river bound for the Gulf of Mexico when it lost power near the Gretna ferry landing, and drifted into the 748-foot-long oil tanker Pamiso and a barge "which were both moored at the International Matex Tank Terminals."

Lally says the collision broke a fuel hose coming off the barge, but crews shut the transfer down immediately and deployed boom. Meantime, the Coast Guard is investigating and keeping vessel traffic restricted to one-way.

No injuries were reported, but the Pamiso and the barge were damaged in the collision. The Coast Guard has restricted the river to one-way traffic in the area while it investigates.
