New Orleans Police say the SWAT team responded to reports of gunfire at the Westin Hotel in the CBD this morning. One person was killed and another wounded.
One person initially barricaded himself inside of a room on the 17th floor.
Police say the situation began about 6:30 Sunday morning. Some guests were evacuated from the hotel, where some say they heard gunshots this morning.
When officers arrived and went to the room, they say they were greeted by a man with a gun. They retreated to a safe position and called for the SWAT team.
After hours of negotiation, police say they were able to go into the room. They found one man dead with a gunshot wound and another injured. Officials say he was taken the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was stabilized at the hospital.
Neither person inside the hotel was from New Orleans. Police did not give any identifying information about either of them.
All guests except those staying on the 17th floor were allowed back in the building shortly after the SWAT roll ended.
The Westin is located in Canal Place near the foot of Canal Street at Iberville.
