Pit bulls attack woman and pet, neighbor shoots dogs
Chris Miller Reporting
A Slidell-area woman and her dog are recovering from a pit bull attack. The attacking dogs are both dead, one of them shot and killed by a neighbor, the other put to sleep.
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's officials say the attack happened Wednesday morning.
"The victim was walking her dog, a miniature collie, on the walking trail near Hunters Point Road, when two pit bulls approached her and began attacking her dog," reads a news release from the sheriff's office. "When she attempted to stop them, they turned on her."
The woman began screaming and a neighbor heard the commotion. According to the sheriff's office, the neighbor grabbed his 9mm pistol and went to investigate. Upon seeing the dog attack, he fired and hit both dogs. One dog died at the scene. The injured animal ran back to its home.
Listen to Capt. George Bonnett:
"Deputies were able to determine who the owner of the pit bulls was," said Capt. George Bonnett with the sheriff's office. "He was cited with a summons for a leash-law violation."
Bonnett says the owner of the pit bulls appeared very upset that his dogs were responsible for the attack, and decided to have the injured pit bull destroyed.
The woman and her miniature collie are expected to make a full recovery.
As for the neighbor who shot the dogs, Bonnett said he will face no charges.
"He did what he thought he needed to do to potentially save this woman's life," Bonnett said.
