Saints safety Jairus Byrd on PUP



New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton today announced Jairus Byrd, the team's major free-agent acquisition this offseason, has been placed on the "physically unable to perform" list.

Payton said Byrd is ahead of schedule in his recovery from back surgery during the offseason. The coach said he expects Byrd to get enough practice in to be ready to go this season.

"We will work day to day with him... I don't want to put a time on it."

Payton expects Byrd to be ready to play in time for the second preseason game.

"Clearly before we leave here, he'll be back on the roster," he said.

Byrd has 22 interceptions since his rookie season in 2009 are the most for any NFL safety.

WWL's Steve Geller says it is disappointing that Byrd is still recovering from back surgery after initial reports were that he would be ready in time for Saints Training Camp.

"He was given a 6-year, $54 million dollar contract," Geller said.  "He was THE free agent acquisition."

Geller added, "It is definitely unsettling for the top free agent acquisition not to be on the field, but I'm not going to get nervous for a couple of weeks."

WWL Saints Sideline Reporter Kristian Garic says Byrd did workout today, but away from other players where he wouldn't get hit.

"Byrd was working by himself on the field, running around pretty well," Garic noted.  "I think this is just a precautionary measure."

He expects Byrd to be ready to go soon.
