Jindal, education super White to meet today

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and his hand-picked education superintendent, John White, have been at odds in recent weeks since Jindal announced his plan to scuttle  Common Core, and with it, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education's contract for the standardized tests to be used in the coming school year. Today, Jindal meets with White and BESE president Chas Roemer to try and resolve their differences.

White and Roemer still support Common Core, but are willing to talk compromise in order to get a test in place for the 2014-2015 year.

"We would be glad to enter a new contract," Roemer said. "We need it to be done in a quick manner, because we have to give our schools and teachers proper guidance."
Commissioner of Administration Kristy Nichols says BESE is taking the right approach. But she advises the education department to consider input from the governor, before the bids go out.
"We're happy to work with them in the process, certainly in a way that is timely," Nichols said.
Jindal and White are set to meet this afternoon to discuss standardized testing plans. Nichols seems optimistic a solution is possible.
